Revisiting The Stephen King Novel: Real Life "Christines" In The Computer World.

Remember the vengeful, possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury from Stephen King's novel, "Christine"? This distinctive looking red and white classic seemed to have its own evil agenda of eliminating anyone who stood against it. It could even repair and rebuild itself after being severely damaged so it could pursue its next victim. So much lost business for the auto body repair shops!

Lady Gaga releases rehearsal footage of new track 'Sex Dreams'

It has become somewhat of a trend over the last few days that Gaga releases brand new footage of her rehearsing for the iTunes Festival.

Gaga is set to open up the free 30-day event at the Roundhouse Theatre in London tomorrow night (Less than 24 hours to go, Little Monsters) and last night, Gaga released footage of herself rehearsing a new track titled 'Sex Dreams'.

The Sopranos In Retrospect

Yes, this is not a band or an album. The Sopranos was the most important television show of my childhood that I never watched. In 1999, my mother and I lived in our three bedroom/two bathroom house with red carpets and popping linoleum, and we had two twenty inch televisions. The living room TV had a missing button, and you could only go up through the channels rather than back and forth. We did not have a larger TV until 2003, I think. I never had a satellite dish or expanded digital cable growing up (still don't), so we never watched HBO unless our cable company gave us some sort of weekend preview.

Instead, we watched highlights of The Sopranos on Entertainment Tonight. My mother loved ET, and we heard more about the show through my uncle's drunken ramblings at holiday dinners. Before this summer, I knew that the show centered around Tony Sopranos, who is the head of the mob, and he had a wife, two kids, and a therapist. That is all I knew before James Gandolfini died.

Let's talk about TV...

If you've turned on a TV lately, you've probably noticed that these days every show is a soap opera. The sitcoms, the dramas, even the game shows (yes, American Idol and The Apprentice are game shows), they all have continuing story arcs that flow from episode to episode and expand over the entire season, or even the entire series. Before the days of DVRs, DVD box sets, and On Demand streaming, things weren't like this. For the first several decades of TV's existence, reset-to-zero was the standard. This meant that situations and story lines would generally wrap up by the end of each episode.

Week 1 2013: Gameday review!

It is a glorious time to be alive when College Gameday returns to Saturday mornings. The guys were broadcasting live from the site of today's matchup where we will see #5 Georgia visiting at #8 Clemson.Today's episode was special for two reasons: they started the real show an hour early (as opposed to last year on ESPNU with the B-team), and they went an extra hour today for a total of FOUR hours of coverage. This was amazing, since we were able to touch all of the bases with all of their regular contributors. They opened the show with Chris Fowler taking a quick moment to remember the great Beano Cook, who passed away last season.

The crowd today had some good signs, and the competition for sign of the day included such classics as "Murray has a mangina", "I'm tied with Clowney for sacks this year", and "I bought this sign from Manziel".But today's sign of the day was undisputed, and we saw it VERY briefly during the first two or three minutes of the show.I present it below without comment or attempting to explain it:

Hi everyone.Something really weird has happened, because it is all of a sudden the end of August and I have no idea how that is even possible.

Sorry for the unannounced, unofficial, semi-unintended break that I appear to have taken from the blog this summer.I've thought about doing blog posts constantly, surely that counts for something?Yeah, I didn't think so either. But, here I am again, still in one piece, still unbowed. And while I know that the entire internet world is just waiting with a two-month baited breath for me to finally pony the fuck up and talk about Egypt, I figured that to finally break my silence, I should at least explain what exactly it is that I have been doing instead.

Summer Movies 2013 in the Rearview, Part 2 of 2 (featuring The Wolverine, Pacific Rim & Star Trek: Into Darkness)

I'm finally getting to review the second half of the movies I saw this summer. I may have mentioned earlier that I'm reviewing them in the order I saw them. Apparently I had tricked myself into believing I'd seen MAN OF STEEL prior to STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS. I actually attempted to see MAN OF STEEL with my family the day that it opened, but there a very strangely acting man seated right behind us, rocking in his seat, sweating and checking his watch while looking all around the theatre. Needless to say, we walked out. It smelled wrong, and we're all a bit paranoid since the opening night shootings during the DARK KNIGHT RISES. We bugged out. That may be why I was thrown off on the timing but probably not. So we're going to say that I will review these from 'worst' to first.

Just a quick update on the Box Office from the Summer releases, nothing much has changed from my previous . THE WOLVERINE climbed a couple of spots to number 12 and is actually the latest movie release of the summer to reach the Top 20 for the season. PACIFIC RIM has still failed to reach the $100M mark domestically, but it's near $400M worldwide, which is better than some of the flicks in the Top 10 US gross. There are a couple of later release comedies that are threatening the $100M mark, but this summer season is essentially over on the eve of Labor Day weekend.

Splatter: Just Harder Times Review

Using the adjective "old school" in the description of a game has begun to set off alarm bells in my head. It used to signify a game's attempt to capture the more positive retro elements of its genre, and present them in a modern format. And that was a good thing. But nowadays it seems the moniker is a licence for indie developers to use bad graphics, frustrating gameplay and rehashed ideas. People seem to have forgotten the difference between "inspired by" and "completely ripping off". Not all "old school"-inspired releases suffer from this confusion, but for every decent re-imagining there are lot of poor clones. Splatter: Just Harder Times is one of these clones, and suffers from all of the aforementioned faults.

A top-down shooter set in a somewhat unclear apocalypse featuring zombies, mutants and monsters, the game begins well but, within about 5 seconds, falls flat on its face. Wailing sirens beckon you outside your shoebox house and onward down the suburban street to investigate some mysterious night-time commotion. And for a brief moment, it seems that there may be a worthy story in the offing, with a multidimensional protagonist and, hell, maybe even some decent pacing. But those notions are shattered immediately as you find a pistol and start blasting everything that moves. As you progress quickly through the level, it seems that either the entire city has gone to hell in a handbasket within about 10 minutes of this outbreak, or that your house exists in some kind of temporal warp, immune to the normal passage of time. Roadblocks are up, fortifications are made, cars are abandoned and the streets are pretty much empty, save for the opposing force of mutant/zombie/monsters.

The article following is a reprint from the paper that includes a story previously published in 2002, when the film was locally screened.

Obama Makes Statement Against (dog) Breed Specific Legislation

Last week was an important one for dogs in the White House. Not only did the Obama family welcome Sunny, a 14-month-old Portuguese Water Dog, but President Obama made a statement against breed-specific legislation.

Here's the official White House Statement on WhiteHouse.gov:

Matt Barber: Miley Cyrus Is Satanic

"We have arrived. Shame on you, America. Our children - our adults - are depraved. They are 'occupied' by envy. They attack innocent people, beating and killing them for sport. They murder one another in the streets without love or mercy. They disobey, gossip, slander and hate God. They are insolent, arrogant, boastful 'little monsters.' They invent ways of doing evil. Hannah Montana is what America once was. MTV Miley is America today. She 'evolved' because we 'evolved.' You saw it on display. It's ugly. It's Satanic." - Hate group leader , writing for World Net Daily.

My Day with Juggalo's

Dear sweet baby Jesus, the only reason I can even express how unerringly boring this day was is because I have regained a semblance of sanity. I cannot actually comprehend the amount of sheer stupidity that happened around me, that I endured for the sake of a dear, old friend.

Now, I could go into stark detail about why this day may have been one of the most repetitive, frustrating and explosively dull days I've ever had the misfortune to live, but instead, I shall relay to you actual dialog through Facebook messaging via smartphone about my general encounters, observations and predicaments. These abrasive and decidedly biased and evil statements may have been the only thing that kept me from chewing my own limbs off as an excuse to leave the party early. I did gnaw on my shoulder bone a little, but I think that may have given one of the Juggalo's a semi-erection, so that idea withdrew itself faster than it presented itself.

An Appreciation of Seamus Heaney's Translation of Beowulf

I started reading Seamus Heaney's Beowulf on the way to my first cross-country meet in 8th grade. I didn't know anything about the story--I didn't even know that the language printed on the other side of the English translation was even a form of English at all. What was a Beowulf? Why did my parents' friend think this was a good birthday present? Much later, I would learn that Heaney, a contemporary Irish poet, achieved no small measure of literary stardom with his translation of the Old English epic. The poem begins as ambiguously as some great modernist works end: So. This is what what a professor would later tell me was "an audacious swing at in medias res," the epic tradition of beginning a tale in the middle of an action. Heaney's so is a callous invocation to a reader; it begins the poem almost as though it were a campfire story. Heaney's translation was not only famously readable--like Fagles' translations of Homer--but it took a widely under-read story and made in accessible again. The thousand-year-old saga appeared on many bestseller lists, on countless assigned reading curriculums, and could be seen just as easily on public transport as in a classroom. It tells the story of a Beowulf, the future-king who is called on by a neighboring ruler for help when a monster terrorizes his domain. W.W. NortonI insisted on making a Halloween costume that was as dangerously armored as it was pretentious; I decided to feast like a Scandinavian king at a Thanksgiving meal, refusing to use knives and forks while eating turkey leg, leaving my parents unsure of whether they should scold me, or do nothing because at least I had gotten it from a book. On the long bus ride to the meet I'd managed to read several hundred lines. I ran distracted that afternoon; I thought about the broad-beamed ship that rode the water, and waiting for Grendel,

Soldier Dragon

I don't think I've ever officially declared it, but Changeman is my favorite Sentai series. The characters, the stories, the cast, the scale of it -- there's a lot I love about the show. Hiryuu Tsurugi/Change Dragon is my favorite Red hero, and I give a lot of credit to the actor, Haruki Hamada, who I really admire.

While Changeman was his first television starring role, Hamada was a dramatically trained stage actor whose teacher encouraged him to pursue auditioning for the show because he thought it would be a good experience for him. At the time, Hamada was one of the youngest actors cast as Red -- 23 at the start of filming in late '84 -- and I think this is something that helps shape the way Tsurugi differs from a majority of his predecessors. One of Changeman's big themes is the way the big space war changes the five young soldiers, how it forces them to grow up, and while Tsurugi is a dependable leader to the team, he's not the one with all of the answers, the stoic guy who has it all worked out -- he goes by gut, he can become too emotionally involved in a case, he puts himself out there if he thinks he sees an injustice. From the very first episode, he's the one who speaks up when he thinks Ibuki has gone too far; his leadership is apparent when he's the one who inspires the other four to stand up to Gozma just as they feel like they're finished. (Episode 47 shows he was even this way as a kid, when saving Aira from rock-throwing bullies.) But he's not perfect, the next couple of episodes highlight the way Tsurugi takes a solo approach, having to learn that he'll have to lean on the others and the Earth Defense soldiers when the burden becomes too much.

Newsbag: Arcade Montage Videos, Winning Eleven 2014 loctest; Pixar Cars Arcade Release + More

Hello all and welcome to another weekend! In the Northern hemisphere now is the time we start looking towards the end of the summer and the colder change in temperatures depending upon where you find yourself. While enjoying the warm temps for as long as possible, make sure to visit your local arcade in the process. And for those in the US enjoying the last big holiday of the summer that anyone cares about, have a safe Labor Day.

This month I finally got my hands on some video editing software and so I've been working on learning how to use it. This should mean my trade show videos will be less "raw" now and I hope to do a few other things with it. Among those other things are some arcade game montages for some games released in 2011, 2012 and 2013. I have some self-promotion for my arcade book in there but apart from that I hope these prove useful in showing off some of the games the industry has to offer; I am working on a couple of other years as well as parts 2. My thanks to a couple of the companies that have provided some direct footage. Enjoy.

Things that seem too horrible to be true

A couple of stories caught my attention this week. I just saw mentions of them on various websites and thought I must be mis-reading or mis-understanding because these are too horrible to possibly be true.

Sadly, they are not.

America's War on War

BY MAHBOOB A. KHAWAJA"THE HELL OF HUMAN SUFFERING, EVIL AND OPPRESSION IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS. THE MEN WHO HAVE MOST INJURED AND OPPRESSED HUMANITY, WHO HAVE MOST DEEPLY SINNED AGAINSTIT, WERE ACCORDING TO THEIR STANDARDS AND THEIR CONSCIENCE GOOD MEN; WHAT WAS BAD IN THEM, WHAT WROUGHT MORAL EVIL AND CRUELTY, TREASON TO TRUTH AND PROGRESS, WAS NOT AT ALL IN THEIR INTENTIONS, IN THEIR PURPOSE, IN THEIR PERSONAL CHARACTER, BUT IN THEIR OPINIONS." (ROBERT BRIFFAULT. THE MAKING OF HUMANITY, LONDON, 1918)If there were any moral, spiritual and intellectual values enshrined in the UNO Charter, the 21st century's global political affairs could have been in more responsive shape and form than the warlike culture of the few. At least, the global community would have attained better sense of moral and legal accountability in the contemporary affairs. Not so, those who envisaged the UNO embodiment, they were more concerned with the aftermath of the 2nd World War and how best to put an end to human triviality and dreadful acts of aggressions against one another. Are we in a different time span than the political affairs, action-reaction of violence and threats of aggression and what oppressed the mankind prior to the imposed human insanity of the WW2?Both World Wars were fought by man against man.Agreeably, wickedness and righteousness cannot be combined in one human character or official policy stance. Even in the beginning of knowledge-based 21st century, the mankind has not fully recovered from the scourge of the 2nd WW. The global powers and the UNO betrayed the public trust and vision for a peaceful future without wars. Rationality must overcome insanity that today's world and the leading powerful nations are again engaged in multifaceted experiments to endanger life, habitats and the living Universe. America and its Western allies pretend to be acting in good faith to safeguard the mankind from the scourge of war and the use of chemical weapons against the innocent civilian population in Syria and elsewhere. It is the self-interest and politically indoctrinated strategic policy to shore up support and argument for another war on Syria. How would it be different than the sadistic cruelty being imposed by the Bashar Al-Assad regime for over two years on the people of Syria?Does the US and other Western nations have a clean slate of their own history of non-chemical warfare against the innocent mankind? The global community is painfully aware that thoseequipped with small wisdom, no knowledge but big mouth and most hated and feared are active again in misleading the humanity.None of the international powerful leaders care for the safety andinterests of the mankind. As early as during the 1916 -1917, the British used mustard gas to kill several thousands of Iraqi civilians agitating for their human rights and freedom from the British colonial rule. It was Winston Churchill - the Secretary-Minister who did that crime against Iraqis. America had unchecked freedom of political insanity to use napalm gas bombs and chemicals in Vietnam and massacred millions until opted for secret negotiations to leave Vietnam. No one could dare to call for American indictment in Vietnam. The global nations had signed the agreement at Hague in 1899 and the Geneva Convention of 1907 to ban the use of chemical weapons. It was reiterated in the Geneva Convention of 1925 and the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court specifically points out that employing "poison or poisoned weapons" and "asphyxiating, poisonous or other gases, and all analogous liquids, materials or devices" are war crimes, under Article 8.During the 1980-90's Iraq self-declared war on the newly formed Islamic Republic of Iran, Saddam Hussein had the blessings of the US and other Western nations to use chemicals weapons on the Iranian and his own Kurd civilians to kill several thousands without any accountability. The UNO and other international agencies are simply spectators and issue paper-based statements and no military action to stop a monster killing the innocent people. The Geneva Convention Related to the Protection of Civilian Persons in time of War (Geneva IV) states clearly "willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health" as a grave breach, which constitutes a war crime.Do the contemporary holy warmongers think that the mankind is shortsighted of its own history or do they believe that it can be forced to believe the unholy virtue of the only left-over superpower to have the divine right to impose its own will over others.Since 2001 in Afghanistan and subsequently, in 2003 Iraq war, the United States and Britain had free hand to use cluster bombs and other prohibited weapons against the civilian population in both countries. It is widely known across the globe that the United States used cluster bombs, depleted uranium, and white phosphorous gas. Cluster bomb canisters have been used containing tiny bomb lets, which could engulf large segments of the population and areas. In Iraq and Afghanistan children have been affected and killed by the unexploded and left-over cluster bombs resulting in serious injuries and psychological scars for ages. It is well known that depleted uranium (DU) weapons spread high levels of radiation over vast areas of human habitats. Many Western analysts and reporters have given eye-witness accounts of sharp increase in health related problems and serious birth defects due to the use of depleted uranium in IraqAfter the US led bogus War on Terrorism, there is a frightening trend in crime explosion against the innocent humanity worldwide. The Arab Middle East and other Muslim countries are no exception. Despite moral and intellectual capacity, nobody takes up the initiatives at conflict management and crisis management. Leaders appear more of insane egoistic character than peacemakers. They are unmindful of the consequences of their own vicious thought and priorities simply to double the imagery of popularity number games. If the United States and its European allies go ahead to strike on Syria and its chemical stock warehouses, the resulting casualties will be more of civilians than the official parts of the authoritarian regime in Syria. The question is, what would such a belligerent strike achieve in short-long terms to help the global community to avoid future mishaps? For over a decade, in Iraq, Afghanistan and its spill-over into North-West Pakistan, millions and millions of people have been victimized by the US failing war strategy. How would the US and its European allies achieve any solid aim of stopping the bloodbaths in Syria?Over the years, lots of show and tell political talks are reported between the warring parties in Syria. There is no surety Assad regime will go away as it is not the strategic goal of the Western nations. Peace-making is not the ultimate aim and rational goal of any nations involved in the Middle East political turmoil. The Arab leaders are themselves devoid of any power or political role-play to sort out their own self-generated misfortunesand crises of time and history. None of the Arab leader could come to the global political arena and justify their credibility in any sense of the political affairs and legitimacy of the governance. All have been groomed and grown out of the colonial match-fixing of the tribal history and European domination of the region. For more than half of a century, there is no concerted efforts to change the neo-colonialism into a democratic system of people's governance envisaged by Islam and its principles. Today's Arab world is a hub of despotism, political cruelty and coming of an unthinkable future of political upheavals. If Egypt was evolving in the shape of civility and people's run system of new democracy under President Morsy, the hope is stalledby the belligerent interests of the Western nations to encourage military intervention and impose deaths and destruction on the Egyptian masses. Unknown and uncertain as it appears to be, who will gain out of the miseries and killings of the Egyptian society. The emerging dreadful scenes of military barbarity- gassed massacres of people in Syria, killings in the streets of Cairo and daily bomb blasts in Iraq against the people should invite the Arab thinkers and intellectuals to reflect on the current affairs -what is going wrong and how could they imagine and articulate an action plan out of imposed neo-colonial system of governance of the few?The drums of war are beating again. No one can imagine that if America makes a war-like strike on Syria, it will help the people of Syria to find a peaceful solution of the crisis. There is no impetus for peacemaking and conflict resolution. Then what is the rationality of talking in-between when Assad regime in Syria and the General Seisi in Egypt are actively killing the masses without any challenge. Do the dictators ever listen to voices of REASON?All the Arab authoritarian rulers enjoy the protection of the US and other European leaders for their own self- interest and continued supply of oil. President Obama and his European friends policies they pursue do not aim at conflict resolution in Syria or peacemaking elsewhere. They need more war-like opportunities to acquire domineering influence more than what they already have to manage direct control over all the Arab countries. This policy should be befitting to the American war economy and Israel's additional capacity-building for supremacy in the region. Undoubtedly, the Arab people and countries are the net losers on all the fronts. Would a war on war make any difference? How could you burn something that is already burnt? How could you stop a fire with a fire?If there were any global moral, spiritual and intellectual powerhouses, they should have taken initiatives to find peaceful ways and means to end the authoritarian hostilities and massacres of the innocent civilians. The history speaks loud and clear that few powerful rulers with individualistic absolutism and most often, mentally retarded persons have always driven the mankind to large scale slaughters, victimization, deprivation and long term scars of why and how it happened, it never goes away from the written pages of human history.ERIC BOGLE WROTE "THE GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE" and it was sung by Fureys:Did you really believe, when they told you the cause,

Did you really believe that this war would end wars?

Join the Fray: Apocalypse in Video Games

A WORLD BOTH OLD AND NEW

The end of the world or the apocalypse is, perhaps, one of the most debated and talked about topics since the dawn of man. The topic of apocalypse was further publicized these past few years because of various end-of-the-world predictions such as the Mayan Calendar and the Malachy Prophecy. But instead of panicking and hiding in their bunkers, the entertainment industry used this opportunity and created TV series and games centered on post-apocalyptic worlds.

THE RENOWNED DIRECTOR VENTURES INTO NEW TERRITORY WITH MARTIAL ARTS EPIC THE GRANDMASTER.

Released in the spring of 2008, My Blueberry Nights was expected to be the big American breakthrough for the esteemed Chinese filmmaker Wong Kar Wai - the first English-language movie from a director whose previous work (In the Mood For Love, Chungking Express, Happy Together, 2046) had earned him an international fan base on the arthouse and film festival circuits.

In Ring 2, it turns out that several of the clues from a dream sequence had by Rachel, are to be found in a scrapbook-notebook kept by .Samara, or her mother. Of the plot element, I am not much concerned. But as a device, this is what I call the "mad scrapbook." The cover is in the dream, and, soon after, Rachel finds it in the Morgan basement, in a trunk

The Man Behind the Podcasts: Patrick Hester

If you hang out in the online SFF community much, you've likely run across Patrick Hester before. The guy is nutty busy. He , , writes a column on graphic novels for , and runs three podcasts, the most notable being the , which has been nominated for a Parsec award and twice nominated for a Hugo Award. In addition to all that, Patrick is an emerging SFF author himself, and--oh yeah--he works a full-time day job! I had the great pleasure of interviewing Patrick for a new article I wrote at , but since I could only use a small portion of our conversation and Patrick had so many great things to say, I decided to run with the full interview transcript here. Enjoy!

Back Home...

I returned home last night from my trip to Virgina to visit my folks. It's always good to get back home after a trip, and the more trips I make, the more true that is...

Debbie had a difficult day yesterday: our oldest cat (Pana) had reached the point where it was time to say good bye, and Debbie had to both make the decision and act on it in my absence.Tough for her, but she did it.We've waited too long for some of other other animals, and have regretted it for years afterward; she was determined not to let that happen again. And she didn't.Little Pana was between 22 and 24 years old, a small all-black cat that was likely part Turkish (because he liked to play in water) that we rescued when he was quite young. He had a long, happy, and safe life in our home...

Fun at the Geat New York State Fair

EH and I were SO EXCITED for our first trip to the NY State Fair that we could hardly sleep the night before. EH went to college at the University of Albany so he was already familiar with the area but I had never been.We saw the advertisement for the Fair by chance and decided that we would make it a point to go at all costs because why not??

We set up the Pandora and listened to some awesome tunes all the way up. Somewhere over the Palisades at an elevation of about 3000 ft we drove into some beautiful low clouds. I can't drive at all (hope to change that this Fall!) but there's nothing that makes me happier than a long stretch of highway. At times I felt like we were the only people in the world.

Once we got there, we made a beeline for food. I ditched the Metformin for the day so I could actually enjoy my gluttony but I ended up not eating as much as I thought I would. EH and I shared this fried dough but it was a little too greasy for me. I wouldn't mind eating it again though.

RIP Seamus Heaney

I do not normally post when authors die mostly because it is not particular to the mission of my blog, but today I feel compelled. One of the greatest poets ever, Seamus Heaney, died early this morning. .

But here is why I want to mention his passing on this blog.Heaney took one of Western Literature's first, and I think, greatest stories-- -- and made it relevant to a 21st Century audience.

10 Upcoming Remakes That Will Probably Suck

Despite what people may tell you (or what's implied by my reviews), I don't think of myself as a negative person. While I'm sure there are more than a few critics that like to comb through every film they see on the lookout for flaws... that's not really me, or at least, that's not who I try to be. I didn't start this blog for the purpose of tearing apart bad movies, I started it because I have a genuine love for the art of filmmaking and I want to see the industry continue to move forward. Unfortunately, given the industry's tendencies to focus on brand-names, spin-offs, reboots, remakes, and re-whatevers, it's been getting harder to remain positive. Even though this summer has actually been a bit better on the originality front than previous years (at least we got Pacific Rim, The Conjuring, Elysium, and a few others), it seems like we're still getting bombarded with remake after remake. So... yeah, today I'm going to be more cynical than usual and gripe about 10 upcoming remakes that will almost definitely suck. Now... I could be wrong about these films, and I'm hoping I am, but I'm not holding my breath. So without further, here are ten films that will (probably) end up sucking.

Honorable Mention: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Pacific Rim (2013) Review

Pacific Rim -* * *

It's kind of like being a little boy playing with action figures in the bath tub: not the most intelligent of times, but pretty fun. And for a movie like this, it's surprising that it doesn't feel very corporate. This is because the director is Guillermo del Toro, and he seems to bring a personal element to the white noise; he's clearly enjoying himself with all the giant robots and monsters and characters, and therefore, so are we. There are visual images and sequences that stand out in the mind, and the blend of music, sound, color and technology make for a sometimes exhilarating experience. There's a kind of beauty to the silliness. It goes on a little too long, and some of the lead characters aren't too interesting, but the comic relief characters are cartoonishly amusing and Idris Elba's fine performance as the tough military leader sells his character. It's a pretty international cast too, so once again, not very corporate. I like that.

Despite the short as "remastered", the series is identical to previous editions had already received a restored image and a full version without censorship. FEARce Five Vol. 3

Greetings my lovely horror hounds! It is Friday which means it is time for another FEARce Five! This week I want to talk about something that no good horror movie can be without and no I don't mean blood and gore, though those don't hurt. No, what I am talking about are the villains we have all come to know and even love. It wasn't until I went to a Monster Mania and made a purchase that I began to question this love for villains.

Last year I met Heather Langenkamp at said horror convention. If that name rings a bell, but you're still drawing a blank, Heather played Nancy in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Heather had many things for sale at her table including a documentary called "I am Nancy". In this self made documentary, Heather investigates the question: "Why Freddy-Mania and not Nancy-Mania?" Granted, this isn't the only horror movie franchise where a villain is more celebrated than it's hero(s), but this is an interesting question to say the least. Why do we love these murderers more than we love the people fighting for their lives? What makes them so much more popular?

[VIDEO] "Juan Dela Cruz" TV Series August 30, 2013 Episode Review

"Juan dela Cruz" is a Philippine primetime TV series directed by Malu Sevilla. It stars Coco Martin as Juan dela Cruz, a half-human and half-vampire who falls in love with Rosario (Erich Gonzales).

The story of this series is about an orphan boy brought up in the church by a righteous parish priest who guided him towards goodness and faith upon the Lord Jesus Christ, who eventually referred as Bossing by Juan.

Zatanna Zatara

Today we leave the Marvel Universe in order to speak of the last DLC character released for INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, the heroic sorceress ZATANNA ZATARA. Despite being an extremely popular character, she only received one live action appearance in the tv series SMALLVILLE, as a recurrent guest star in the last three seasons. Portrayed by SERINDA SWAN, Zatanna acted both as a mysterious ally to CLARK KENT and his friends and, more often, as a pesty and unpredictable menace, who enjoyed putting people and relationships at risk just for some fun. In the DC Universe, she's a powerful and precious member of the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA (in several incarnations of the team), and definitely a heroine. Let's see together.

Zatanna was born the daughter of GIOVANNI "JOHN" ZATARA, an adventurer and one of the most powerful magicians ever lived, and SINDELLA, member of a mystical race called HOMO MAGI. From her very first childhood, it was clear she would have been an incredibly skilled magician, especially considering her well-known ancestors, a century-long lineage that includes, among the others, the inventor LEONARDO DA VINCI, the alchemist NICHOLAS FLAMEL, the clairvoyant NOSTRADAMUS and the wizard CAGLIOSTRO. When her mother faked her death in order to come back to her people in TURKEY, John kept her magical origins secret from his daughter, but, also as a child, Zatanna was fascinated by magic and prestidigitation. In her childhood, Zatanna lost her father too, since the sorceress ALLURA cursed them both with a spell that prevented each other to ever meet each other. The girl was raised by strangers, always with the desire of meeting her natural father. Once a teenager, she discovered her father's diary and, inspired by it, she created a stage persona and started studying magic. With the money gained with her shows, Zatanna gave a new energy to her quest to find out the truth about her parents, and she started looking for her father around the world. In her travels she met JOHN CONSTANTINE, a British occultist who she started an affair with, and who helped her discovering her true powers: an innate ability with magic, the real stuff. She also met some members of the Justice League of America who helped her with her search. Finally, thanks to the help of BATMAN, ROBIN, HAWKMAN and HAWKGIRL, ELONGATED MAN and GREEN LANTERN, Allura's spell was broken, and Zatanna was finally reunited with her father. John had finally the occasion to speak to Zatanna about her true origins, and especially of her mother Sindella. Finally, Zatanna had found a place in the world, having found loyal friends in the JLA and, most of all, a family she belonged.

Adventures in Raising Your Own Dog Food

Sorry, there's no pictures of baby farm animals. I wish I could say I had a flock of ducks or sheep to show you, but sadly I'm talking about raising plants. Firstly, if you're squeamish about bugs then growing your own vegetables will go one of two ways: You'll either lose your entire crop to pests, or you'll overcome your fear and go on a bug destroying rampage.

Last year I dipped my toes into gardening, but aside from a very productive indoor jalapa pepper and a 9-foot tall tomato vine(that I got maybe two edible tomatoes out of) it was a complete wash. My thyme and strawberry both sprouted up as weird, demonic fern-things that did not remotely resemble the plants they were supposed to be and that would stab you with furry needles if you accidentally brushed against them. I still have no idea what was actually in the seed packets I bought that year. I ended up giving up on everything but the jalapa, which we saved indoors and brought with us when we moved to the barnhouse. Despite losing all it's leaves and a few branches, it survived the winter and sprouted quite a few peppers. Jalapas are like jalapenos, which is actually what I thought I was buying, but are smaller and hotter. While my jalapa plant is of questionable heritage, I decided not to replace it with a proper jalapeno that came with a GMO-free guarantee purely because it's the first plant my boyfriend and I bought when we moved in together and I'm a sentimental sap. I nearly killed it again this spring when I put it outside right before an unexpected cold snap. I'll likely plant a proper hot pepper outside next year and the jalapa can live a cushy indoor life as a decorative houseplant in the loft. When they're not half dead pepper plants are actually very nice looking.

Artist Who Painted Vladimir Putin In Women's Underwear Has To Flee Russia

Artist Konstantin Altunin is seeking asylum in France today, after being forced to flee his native Russia following the removal of several of his paintings from a gallery by Russian police officers. Among those removed was a painting of Russian Preisdent Vladmir Putin in a negligee, doing the hair of former President Dmitry Medvedev.

Apparently, this sort of political commentary is poorly taken in Russia. Who knew? I mean, other than Pussy Riot and also . I guess they knew.

Media Blasters licenses Ultimate Girls

Media Blasters has acquired the license to the 2005 12-episode anime series UG: Ultimate Girls, prompting immediate backlash from anime and tokusatsu fandoms alike. I think this is somewhat unwarranted, because, while the show is sort of a sleazy fan-service-fest, it's occasionally a pretty decent Ultraman parody as well.

The premise is about the space hero UFOman coming to earth and having to transfer his powers/duties to not one, but three teenage heroines, who then grow to giant size to battle kaiju. The ecchi part comes in with the detail that as the colossal schoolgirls duke it out, their costumes dissolve away as their powers deplete, and some of the monsters have pretty suggestive designs. However, there're also a handful of great in-jokes, such as a monster with "Bullmark" written on the bottom of his foot, or shot-for-shot recreations of iconic Ultra-franchise moments, which will serve Ultra-fans well (and go over the heads of everyone else). I'm glad that North America will be getting this show on DVD, and I also think it was prudent of them to wait until Ultraman and Ultraseven were available before trying to sell it here.

[Anime Review] My Little Monster (2012)

My Little Monster is a shoujo anime about a wild, crazy boy and a studious girl. Shizuku Mizutani is a super bookworm who only cares about studying and nothing else. One day, she is bribed by her teacher to take handouts to her classmate, Haru Yoshida, who was supposed to have the seat next to her, but had been suspended on the first day of school due to fighting. After dropping off the handouts, Haru considers Shizuku a friend and follows her around. Despite his uber violent tendencies, Shizuku learns that Haru isn't so bad. Eventually, they start crushing on one another and cue romance.

This series was really cute and funny. I really liked the characters. Haru's innocence and wackiness, Shizuku's blunt speech and studious nature. The supporting characters were also a lot of fun and really likeable. My only issue was that the series was entirely too short! I wanted to see Haru and Shizuku's relationship develop even more. However, the manga is still ongoing so a true ending wasn't possible. But the series didn't do too bad and provided a believable ending to tide viewers over until a potential second season. My Little Monster is worth a watch when you find you've got a couple of hours free.

This was one snippet of a larger conversation in which we lamented the lack of vacation time (in her case) or money (in mine). Most people would say that I have little grounds for complaining, considering that my post-college travels have taken me to 70 countries on six continents. And if I'm content in my new life, it's because I have finally accepted (well, mostly accepted) that I just don't have the pecuniary wherewithal to travel anymore. My unforgettable spring trip to Colombia nearly broke the bank - and that's considered to be a cheap country! These days, a day trip to Teotihuac n is about all I can manage.

These are a few of my favourite things....

Before we left on this trip Josh and I spent a lot of time thinking about what we would actually need to to bring along with us to ensure that we could have a fun and safe trip. Having never been on a trip like this we could not draw on experience only to make these choices, so we turned to the net. There wasn't much info out there to be honest so I thought I would put together a couple of quick posts about what we brought with us and which products have made our lives easier while we have been on the road.

Whist Josh and I were already pretty well set up with our outdoor gear we decided to invest some money before we left on upgrading some of our gear. We chose products that we thought would either reduce the weight of our packs or simply increase our comfort during our travels.

Here are some of the products that we have found particularly handy over the last few months....

New father Kawashima Masayuki is obsessed with the fear that one day he will stab his infant daughter in her sleep. He stands over her crib many a night contemplating the way the icepick would slice into that tender baby flesh, savoring the horror of it all, questioning whether he could actually commit such a heinous act. He doesn't really believe he would ever harm his child, but once he gets the idea, it takes over, consuming him. The only way to clear his obsession, he decides, is to murder a prostitute, stabbing her to death to expel his demons. Unfortunately for Kawashima, he picks the wrong hooker. Escort Chiaki is just as tortured and violent as he is. What follows is a meditation on violence, compulsion and how your shitty past inevitably fucks up your future and how we prefer to inflict our shit on others rather than face up to our problems.

Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Review

Neverwinter is the latest free-to-play Dungeons and Dragon's MMO game from Cryptic and Perfect World. This game is still in its open beta phase. Believe it or not, I've been one of those kids in the past that would show up to play Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game in hope of rolling a good pick with the D20. That being said, I was not ever good at D&D but I enjoyed watching others display passion into the game. As a fan of RPGs, I couldn't wait to get myself into this open beta! How well does it live up to it's D&D glory? Let's find out.

Back To Frank Black: A Return To Chris Carter's Millennium: A Book Analysis

I'm biased.I admit it.I am a generally ravenous advocate and lover of all things Chris Carter.I'm a restless viewing recidivist of THE X-FILES (1993-2002) and MILLENNIUM (1996-1999).I'm also simply tireless in absorbing any and all things by the writing and directing team of Glen Morgan and James Wong. And yes, I was a contributor to this stunning book of dreams (but don't let that stop you).

Reading the book BACK TO FRANK BLACK: A RETURN TO CHRIS CARTER'S MILLENNIUM (2012) is nothing short of reading a scholarly analysis of this amazing, intensive chapter in the Chris Carter legacy. It's the MILLENNIUM equivalent to any number of the finest of publications released by BENBELLA on pop culture television today. But this shining beacon of hope on MILLENNIUM by way of the written word from the remarkable FOURTH HORSEMAN PRESS delivers an editing gem by Adam Chamberlain and Brian A. Dixon.

Confession: I'm a YA Sci-Fi Addict

Let's just dwell on the pure fact that I could binge read sci-fi young adult novels for the rest of my earthly days and consider that a mighty fine success. Thankfully, I have overcome my shame of loving these often 15 year old targeted books at my more seasoned college graduate age. This is my mini-list of favorites. Voted to leave out Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight and Mortal Instruments due to their current popularity. Although, I do have a special place in my heart for all those series and highly recommend you check them out if you haven't already.

1. The Selection (series): America Singer finds herself thrown into a futureist dating "reality show" setting with 35 other girls. The winner is provided the opportunity to escape the caste limited life laid out for them since birth. One of the most creative future society books I've dived into, filled with dynamic plot, relateable to our version of dating tv shows.

Four Hundred False Dawns, Part Two ('Doctor Who', 1997-2004)

After the failure of the 1996 television movie, at least in the United States, it seemed unlikely for a time that we would be getting any televised Doctor Who ever again. By 2003, with the Daleks reduced to 'humorous' advert appearances and the show only surviving via novels or audio, it was a bleak time to be a fan - indeed, at this point, I'd moved on to 24[1]. In fact, the late 1990s and early 2000s were not a great time for science fiction all-round.

So, let us cover the second part of the hiatus years, where the show took some interesting potential turns and then the biggest news of all dropped

Monster Hoax or Truly Beast?

The Saber-Toothed Assassin (top), was supposedly seen last Tuesday night by Mac Dee Dee who's meat crate it ripped open (bottom).

You might recall that in the past, we've written on some strange creature sightings in the past (e.g. and a ), and for the past few months, Riverville has been sort of quiet in this department because we haven't had any strange creature sightings . . . until last Tuesday night. Just when we thought all was quiet, another one of these unidentified creatures, known as "cryptids", makes its presence known at Mac Dee Dee's Farm, the same farm that opened just a few weeks ago. When a cryptid was sighted at the farm, my trusty, junior photographer, Daniel P. Smithwater and I went over to the farm to get an interview with the farm's owner, Mac Dee Dee. "It was about 10:00 p.m. and I was sitting in my office about to go lie down for some shuteye," says Mac Dee Dee, "when I looked up at the computer monitor that was connected to the security camera's we have outside and I just barely noticed a large creature run through the woods near the place I keep one of my tractor containment crates." Mac Dee Dee went on to explain that inside the crate was a refrigerated compartment for holding fresh cow meat that was going to be shipped off the following day. Mac Dee Dee was quoted for saying, "But now I can't ship any of that meat off because that creature, whatever it was, clawed it open. It didn't bother to try eating the meat however, I'm not sure why. But just before it left, a pressed the 'snap photo' button on the security camera program and got a good picture of the beast." Mac Dee Dee explained that his security camera system didn't save video footage, otherwise he would have taken a gotten a video clip of the beast. When I asked to see the photo, he showed it to me. The creature was unlike any wild creature I'd seen before. It was a four-legged, rhino-sized predator with a pair of saber-teeth protruding from its mouth, much like a saber-toothed cat. But this wasn't a cat, in fact, it wasn't even a mammal, but a reptile by the looks of it. Then Mac Dee Dee took us to see the crate the predator had torn through. True to his word, the animal's sharp claws tore right through it and due to the possibility of contamination, Mac Dee Dee had to loose his meats. With Mac Dee Dee's permission, I took the photo to Dr. Samuel Adamson, a head paleontologist at Animal Adventures Institute to see if he could identify the creature for me (I went to him instead of a zoologist because I thought this might be an animal believed to be extinct). He is quoted for saying, "I'm not exactly sure, but this cryptid is, but it looks a great deal like the Permian reptile known as a gorgonopsid. Depending on the species, a gorgonopsid could be the size of a small dog, to the size of a rhinoceros in the case of a species such as Gorgonops and Inostrancevia. But what all gorgonopsids had in common was a pair of saber-teeth that protruded from the top of the jaw." As you might recall, the head geneticist of Animal Adventures Institute, Dr. Steve Stevenson, has successfully cloned a gorgonopsid named Gordon, but she's assured me that she's not the one responsible for tearing into Mac Dee Dee's meat crate. "I was sleeping like a baby at 10pm on Tuesday night," she says. "Ask anyone here at the [Animal Adventures] Studios and they'll tell you the same. Besides, if I did sneak out and run to Mac Dee Dee's farm, security would have spotted me." So with this new cryptid sighting making all the main local news outlets, it's guaranteed that this creature - now being affectionately referred to as "The Saber-Toothed Assassin" by some - is bound to attract some monster hunters, hoping to prove its existence. We may not know if this creature's a hoax or a real animal, but perhaps 21st century technology will help track this monster down before it causes too much trouble, but if its anything like the famous cryptids such as Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster and the Yeti, we could be searching for the Saber-Toothed Assassin for some time to come . . . let's hope it doesn't turn up in my backyard!

2013 Fall/Holiday Preview

With summer coming to an end for another year, life takes a different turn from the carefree days of our warmest months; the beginning of school isn't far off, the weather turns from warm and sunny to cooler and our attention turns from barbecues and vacations to the preparation for the holidays. Autumn is, no doubt about it, my favorite time of year but I do have to admit that I feel a bit of a pang of loss for Hollywood's blockbuster season.

Fear not, however because there will be plenty of movies this fall that will keep us from missing those popcorn epics we know and love. was a big success particularly overseas where it seemed to strike a chord (although a lot of Marvel fanboys have expressed some displeasure over the film but that is just, as far as I can tell, the inevitable Internet fanboy backlash that comes to every franchise). Also grabbing some big box office numbers was which although less successful with the critics, got big box office number and a good deal of fanboy approval, paving the way for DC to create a shared cinematic universe of their own - a sequel has already been fast tracked and it is said that preparation for a Justice League movie is well under way. Superheroes weren't the only big winners either as did big box office as did while and showed that the family film market is still thriving.

Let's Play a game!

Hiya friends! For all those workin' hard for a living peeps, YAY it's almost time for a long weekend!I love having Mondays off when I work- almost every year I've used up vacation by taking off most Mondays in December.Something psychologically satisfying about skipping the day, I guess.Of course, every day is sort of the same for me right now, so I'm just happy on your behalf.Anyone doing anything fun this weekend? We have a picnic to go to Saturday (hopefully little man is up for it....so glad it's right down the road!) And then working on some fun Sunday plans. We shall see.

Of COURSE I want to talk about the little guy.Well, maybe not so little.Last night started boxing up some of his newborn clothes (some even unworn!) and it gave me a major case of the sads.I am adoring him more and more very day as he grows into a little person, but it's kindasad knowing that he will never fit into his little monster onesie.Or the turtle overalls.Awww, shuckers.I bet that's why people have more than one turd, isn't it?(No, that is NOT an announcement.Yikes).

Anyways, as my little man gets bigger and bigger, we work on strengthening that mind and body at the same time-especially when I am home and can devote 20 hours a day to him (hey, even momma's need sleep). When I was pregnant with the lil guy, we got a gift for one of thosepuppies that are so popular right now.It was super cute...until one morning at 6:30 when Greg was going upstairs to brush his teeth and he heard a voice coming from the empty nursery..."Let's Play a Game!".Freaky.And while I'm not sure he's recovered, the puppy is almost ready to come play.Until then, we play our own fun games like....

Ben Wheatley To Adapt JG Ballard's "Block War" Novel, High Rise

Producer JEREMY THOMAS has decided to set BEN WHEATLEY as director on a film version of JG BALLARD's High Rise, working from a script by Wheatley's wife and regular collaborator, AMY JUMP.

The novel is about the moral decay of a society housed in an ultramodern high rise tower, something not too dissimilar to a less-fantastical Mega City tower block. David Cronenberg played with similar ideas, amongst others, in Shivers, and just this weekend I saw the Spanish movie, Last Days at Frightfest and there was a tinge of Ballard's thinking in there too. I believe there was also an episode of Doctor Who called Paradise Towers that played with the same ideas. Ballard really started something.

WHERE CAN I READ GOOSEBUMPS BOOKS FOR FREE?

Finding Monsters by Liss Thomas

I really liked this book. It was interesting to read how the world looked from an elf's point of view. I really enjoyed when the kids were hiding in the "library" and talking about humans and how big the books were. Then when they were on high enough ground to see a volcano was also interesting. I liked the ending and I also could not believe who the traitor was. I am giving this book a 4 because the ending mentioned Saul, and I am left with too many questions. I hope there is a sequel soon.

I am giving this book a 4/5.

Showing up...

So I want to preface this post by warning you that I'm about to vent. And so please, do not hold these thoughts against me, as I may contradict myself in the future... esp. when it's not that time of the month or I get a rare ladies night off and am still pretending I'm a college student - single and free...

Working mothers have it hard. I don't know how to see it as anything but a lose-lose situation. You can't balance being a good "worker," good mother, and a good wife. I didn't even include good friend, good neighbor, and good daughter/sister to that list. I don't care who you are, unless you have the ability to clone yourself or train your body to run on 2 hours of sleep, you can't have it all.

Project Movieball Post 1

Hello everyone.

So I was thinking, what could be a good topic for a short series of Posts. so i walked around my house toiling for hours, then I remembered, I made a 400 piece origami model. and I drew on Every Single one. To me, this sounds like a pretty cool series for me to write, If only I had individual images from all 220 Drawings.

The Top 10 Bands of the 21st Century

This is the DEFINITIVE list of the top 10 bands of the 21st century.

CRITERIA:

The Ultimate (So Far) History of Exidy

Today's post is the final installment of my history of Exidy (not counting the errata and statistics). Unfortunately, it won't be nearly as complete as the other posts since a) it's after the time covered by my book and b) I don't have nearly as many sources of information for the post-1989 years.

Cheyenne and Combat

My years in horror: 1981

1981 had a lot to offer the horror fan. I was still too young to know what was going on although photographic evidence points toward the establishment of my lifelong love of the genre. Later, during a brief fling with cable, I would come to love two of 1981's best: the TV movie Dark Night of the Scarecrow and the adaptation of Peter Straub's Ghost Story. Two more 1981 classics would catch up to me via video: The Evil Dead and My Bloody Valentine.

Scarecrow and Valentine have their devoted fanbases and the powers that be finally released Dark Night of the Scarecrow on Blu-ray in 2011. But I don't see anyone arguing for either of those movies int he best of the year category. Ghost Story and The Evil Dead, on the other hand, are legit contenders and could have been the top movie in any number of other years. Unfortunately for them, one big bad wolf also hit theaters in 1981.

Blasphemous Gaming -- The Binding of Isaac (2011)

When Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl released their independent video game The Binding of Isaac in 2011, they probably had some idea that their creation would be controversial. They didn't expect it would sell a million copies, but .

If you watched the embedded clip above, you'll know now that the premise of the game is profoundly religious: Isaac is to be sacrificed to God by his devout mother, so he escapes to the basement where he fights monsters. We're probably all aware that Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah (if you need a refresher). It's commonly interpreted as a test of faith or loyalty, but it also has significant meaning in relation to the substitutive nature of sacrifice (animals for people). In this game, it's an opportunity for the darkest religious themes to become power-ups for your character's survival as Isaac.

Scylla

TODAY I AM GOING TO WRITE A POST ON SCYLLA. I PERSONALLY FIND HER CREEPY YET BEAUTIFUL, SHE MAY NOT BE THAT WELL KNOWN AND THAT IS WHY I CHOSE TO WRITE A POST ABOUT HER. SO LETS GET TO IT. IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, SCYLLA (GREEK:SKYLLA) WAS A MONSTER THAT LIVED ON ONE SIDE OF A NARROW CHANNEL OF WATER, OPPOSITE ITS COUNTERPART CHARYBDIS. THE TWO SIDES OF THE STRAIT WERE WITHIN AN ARROW'S RANGE OF EACH OTHER-SO CLOSE THAT SAILORS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID CHARYBDIS WOULD PASS TO CLOSE TO SCYLLA AND VICE VERSA. TRADITIONALLY THE STRAIT HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE STRAIT OF MESSINA BETWEEN ITALY AND SICILY. THE IDIOM "BETWEEN SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS" HAS COME TO MEAN BEING BETWEEN TWO DANGERS, CHOOSING EITHER OF WHICH BRINGS HARM. THERE ARE VARIOUS GREEK MYTHS ACCOUNTING FOR SCYLLA'S ORIGINS AND FATE. THERE ARE VARIOUS GREEK MYTHS ACCOUNTING FOR SCYLLA'S ORIGIN AND FATE. ACCORDING TO SOME, SHE WAS ONE OF THE CHILDREN OF PHORCYS AND CETO. OTHER OURCES, INCLUDING STESICHOURS, CITE HER PARENTS AS TRITON AND LAMINA. ACCORDING TO JOHN TZETZES AND SERYIUS' COMMENTARY ON THE AENEID, SCYLLA WAS A BEAUTIFUL NAIAD WHO WAS CLAIMED BY POSEIDON, BUT THE JEALOUS AMPHITRITE TURNED HER INTO A MONSTER BY POISONING THE WATER OF THE SPRING WHERE SCYLLA WOULD BATHE. A SIMILAR STORY IS FOUND IN HYGINUS, ACCORDING TO WHOM SCYLLA WAS THE DAUGHTER OF THE RIVER GOD CRATAEIS AND WAS LOVED BY GLAUCUS, BUT GLAUCUS HIMSELF WAS ALSO LOVE BY THE SORCERESS CIRCE. WHILE SCYLLA WAS BATHING IN THE SEA, THE JEALOUS CIRCE POURED A POTION IN TO THE SEA WATER WHICH CAUSED SCYLLA TO TRANSFORM INTO A MONSTER WITH FOUR EYES, SIX LONG NECKS EQUIPPED WITH GRISLY HEADS, EACH WHICH CONTAINED THREE ROWS OF SHARP TEETH. HER BODY CONSISTED OF TWELVE TENTACLE-LIKE LEGS AND A CAT'S TAIL WHILE FOUR TO SIX DOG-HEADS RINGED HER WAIST. IN THIS FORM SHE ATTACKED THE SHIPS OF PASSING SAILORS, SEIZING ONE OF THE CREW WITH EACH OF HER HEADS. IN A LATE GREEK MYTH, RECORDED IN EUSTATHIUS' COMMENTARY ON HOMER AND JOHN TZETZES, HERACLES ENCOUNTERED SCYLLA DURING A JOURNEY TO SICILY AN SLEW HER. HER FATHER, THE SEA-GOD PHORCYS, THEN APPLIED FLAMING TORCHES TO HER BODY AND RESTORED HER TO LIFE. IN HOMER'S ODYSSEY XII, ODYSSEUS IS GIVEN ADVICE BY CIRCE TO SAIL CLOSER TO SCYLLA, FOR CHARYBDIS COULD DROWN HIS WHOLE SHIP: "HUG SCYLLA'S CRAG-SAIL ON PAST HER- TOP SPEED! BETTER BY FAR TO LOOSE SIX MEN AN KEEP YOUR SHIP THAN LOSE YOUR ENTIRE CREW" SHE WARNS, AN TELLS ODYSSEUS TO BID SCYLLA'S MOTHER, THE RIVER NYMPH CRATAEIS, TO PREVENT HER FORM POUNCING MORE THAN ONCE. ODYSSEUS THEN SUCCESSFULLY SAILS HIS SHIP PAST SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS, BUT SCYLLA MANAGES TO CATCH SIX OF HIS MEN, DEVOURING THEM ALIVE.

On Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Last weekend, the nerdmageddon known as FanExpo Canada hit Toronto's Metro Convention Centre, and despite my on convention season, I was seriously considering going, but ultimately tapped out due to the financial commitment required and my unwillingness to spend my rent money getting photos with Nathan Fillion and The Walking Dead's Dixon Brothers. But it was dicey there for a minute.

I'd forgive you if you'd forgotten or were unaware of how deep my geekery runs. Most of the topics around here lately seem to centre around hip-hop or weak-kneed attempts at personal insight. But it's always gurgling inside me, ready to spurt out at any moment, from my continued love of professional wrestling, my slavish dedication to the comic series , or the fact that after September 17, I will be on permanent vacation causing mayhem throughout .

'Secret' #3 And Other Comics Of Note, August 28th

Nobody does intrigue quite like Jonathan Hickman, and Secret is rapidly becoming the best example of that. A full review, plus looks at this week's #1s and other notable books from DC, Dark Horse, and IDW.

Essentially, Secret follows a private security firm as they stumble onto something ugly, much uglier than they imagined. One can't really talk about the plot in detail because it's so intricate that you really need to go in cold, but Hickman mixes together revels and opening up new questions as the book goes along, while simultaneously deepening the characters. The opening of the book is not what you think, at all, and it tells you a lot about how this series works.

I'm British: Where's the bunyip?

This week I became more than a little excited at the prospect of meeting a real-life bunyip in Canberra's zoo.

Unfortunately for me, I'd been tricked, and my eagerness was quickly replaced by that very same feeling which hit me when I first learnt the truth about the dreaded dropbears.

'Bad Milo' Clip: Emotional Breakthroughs Via Sock Puppet

We're only one day away from viewing KEN MARINO's bowel-dwelling little monster in all its gory glory - BAD MILO will be hitting VOD tomorrow. But for those who can't wait (or who feel that Bad Milo's level of weird deserves to be seen on the big screen, which'll happen on October 4), a brand new clip from the film can be viewed below. I urge you to do so, lest you fall victim to your own butt demon.

It's pretty clear why Marino's character has so much pent-up rage (among other things bottled up inside him). His wife doesn't respect him. It's not clear if his therapist actually respects him, as PETER STORMARE is behaving like a lunatic and may not even be a real therapist. Although the sock puppets do seem to be working. And Duncan (Marino's character) seems to have a few hidden father issues, as we can figure out once his sock puppet role-play starts to get a little out of hand. Take a look:

Lost Planet 3 Bestiary Unlock Guide

The monsters and creatures that populate the frigid planet of E.D.N. III are known commonly as Akrid. While most of them are unarmored, and therefore easy to take out with the weapons you have at your disposal, some of them are protected by hard shells and can only be hurt when they are struck on a particular point.

Therefore, we have decided to compile this guide on the many of the types of Akrid that you will face as you journey through the game. We've also included some strategies you can keep in mind when fighting these enemies.

'47 Ronin' International Trailer Doesn't Let Keanu Speak

It would stand to reason that 47 RONIN could be something of a hard sell in Japan, seeing as it takes a story that's been an important part of Japanese history and culture and co-opts it into being a glossy starring vehicle for an American actor (KEANU REEVES) who gets painted as being its hero.

Heck, 47 Ronin could even be a hard sell in the States, because if proved anything to us, it's that the notoriously surfer-voiced Reeves looks and sounds kind of ridiculous when he's playing a character who exists anywhere other than in modern times. There is one thing that always sells pretty well no matter where you are in the world though, and that's big spectacle action. So this new Japanese trailer for 47 Ronin shuts its characters up, doesn't do too much to mention any historical tales, and focuses instead on all of the big sword fights with various mythical creatures that it contains.
