Rookie safety Reid earns starting job with 49ers

49ERS ALREADY HAVE 11 PICKS IN 2014 DRAFT

That's always been the goal." When Fangio walked through the locker room a few minutes later, Reid said: "What's up, Coach? I heard the news." In response, a smiling Fangio offered, "You knew." In 39 career college games with 26 starts over three seasons for the Tigers, the 6-foot-1, 213-pound Reid finished with 199 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 11 pass breakups and 4 1/2 tackles for loss. "Just everything we've talked about, he's been good. He's shown that he's picked up the system fast and played well in games," Harbaugh said. "It's been a nice progression, nice process for him." San Francisco traded up with Dallas to draft the speedy safety with the 18th pick out of Louisiana State, believing all along he would make an immediate impact as a rookie. "He doesn't look confused at all now," Whitner said. "He's a guy, from high school on to college, he's always been a good student and a student of the game. When you put those two in a guy that is willing to work, that's why you win a starting free safety spot on arguably the best defense as a rookie. It's hard to do, and he did it." Fangio offered a pace throughout the offseason and training camp that allowed Reid to grasp the concepts of the defense without becoming overwhelmed while learning more each day.

RAIDERS/49ERS STADIUM ADD-ON THOUGHTS:

8 season opener against Green Bay at Candlestick Park. And Reid, San Franciscos first-round draft pick in April, soon heard about the announcement from reporters that he had earned a spot on one of the NFLs top defenses. I feel like a professional football player now, Reid said. Its obviously good news for me. Im just going to keep working hard and try to keep the spot. Ive been running with the 1s the last couple days. Thats always been the goal. When Fangio walked through the locker room a few minutes later, Reid said: Whats up, Coach? I heard the news. In response, a smiling Fangio offered, You knew. In 39 career college games with 26 starts over three seasons for the Tigers, the 6-foot-1, 213-pound Reid finished with 199 tackles, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 11 pass breakups and 4 tackles for loss. Just everything weve talked about, hes been good.

THE 49ERS/HARBAUGH BIG PICTURE: HE WON'T TALK ABOUT THE LONG-LONG-TERM, BUT SOON ENOUGH, IT'LL BE HERE

A fifth-round draft pick by San Francisco in 2006, Haralson has played in 86 games with 68 starts. Hes been credited with 295 tackles, 21.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. The Saints, who run a 3-4 defense, have lost both projected starting outside linebackers to knee injuries. Will Smith is out for the year, while Victor Butler will miss most or all of the season. SCOUTING REPORT: CHARGERS VS. 49ERS

On NFL Network: The latest installment of "America's Game", which chronicles the BaltimoreRavens' rise to Super Bowl XLVII champions, will premiere on NFL Network on Monday, Sept. 2 at 9 p.m. ET. NFLShop.com: Buy 'America's Game' DVDs That quest hit a speed bump on Tuesday. Needing to get down to 75 players, the Niners waived/injured Okoye, the 2012 Olympian from Great Britain who landed an NFL contract with an impressive showing at the NFL Super Regional Combine in Dallas. Okoye suffered a knee injury in the 49ers ' preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.

49ERS ROOKIE ERIC REID WILL BE STARTING FREE SAFETY FOR SEASON OPENER

More: 49ers waive two, place eight others on injury lists The move is significant because it likely means the 49ers expect both players back at some point this season. With the PUP list, players do not count toward the 53-man roster, but they are also ineligible to play for the first six weeks of the NFL season, only able to return to practice on the Tuesday following the completion of said sixth week. Crabtree will likely be absent for longer than the six weeks. The 49ers are hoping Crabtree can come back at some point before the playoffs and get enough playing time to be fresh in order to help them reach the Super Bowl again. San Francisco's wide receiver depth chart is a mess at the moment. Anquan Boldin became the No. 1 receiver and the team is expected to lean on tight end Vernon Davis in the passing game, but things get murky from there. A.J. Jenkins was recently traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Jon Baldwin , who is raw and still doesn't know the playbook.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS TOP PICK ERIC REID WINS STARTING JOB

But both sides decided that there was no urgency to get anything done right now; Harbaugh is comfortable dealing with this in due time, and so is 49ers owner Jed York. Harbaugh is logically going to want a big raise whenever he gets a new deal, and yes, he almost certainly will deserve one. Interestingly, at $5 million per, Harbaugh is currently the third-highest-paid coach in the NFC West, behind St. Louis Jeff Fisher ($7 million) and Seattles Pete Carroll ($6 million). Meanwhile, the 49ers are getting their state-of-the-art stadium ready for a grand opening next season, and are a favorite to get to andthis timewin the Super Bowl. Everything is focused on Harbaugh. He knows that, the Yorks know that, Baalke knows that, the entire team knows that. If the 49ers win the Super Bowl this season, I think Harbaugh will get a monster extension at a salary close to double what hes making now.

LAWRENCE OKOYE PLACED ON 49ERS' WAIVED/INJURED LIST

49ERS CONFIRM TRADE OF LINEBACKER PARYS HARALSON TO SAINTS FOR 2014 DRAFT PICK

If he moves them, or if he perhaps sells them, the move would be almost certainly to Los Angeles, not Santa Clara. * If Mark Davis and his mother did buy out a limited partner, and I believe they did (I asked, he had no comment), Im quite sure that it wasnt from any of the East Coast group that bought a 20% share back in 2007 as Al Davis was raising more capital. My understanding is that the seller was one of the older limited partners. I dont know who it was or the percentage. But buying up old shares makes senseDavis could be accumulating old shares in order to start selling off more fractions of the team to raise stadium capital. He has the first right, as owner, to buy out the old limited partners if they want out.

KAEPERNICK, 49ERS' DEFENSE STRONG IN 34-14 WIN

just making sure your body is ready to roll." Ponder went 17 of 23 for 116 yards, a step up after two unimpressive outings and a 28.3 passer rating in his first two exhibition games. This hardly looked like the Vikings' group that handed the NFC champion Niners their first loss last fall, a 24-13 victory Sept. 23 in Minneapolis. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) passes against the Minnesota Vikings during the On the third play of the game, Ponder fumbled and gave the 49ers the ball at the Vikings 11. Ahmad Brooks swiped the ball away and Aldon Smith recovered.

He is in a dog-fight with Will Tukuafu and Demarcus Dobbs for what could be no more than a couple roster spots, and he is impressing. Tukuafu on the other hand is coming off a performance that could at best be described as uneven. It helps that he can play some fullback, but that might not be enough to save his spot. Lawrence Okoye gets included in arrow down because of his injury, but that could prove fortuitous in the long-run. I would expect him to clear waivers if released, but this potentially makes it a little easier. Inside Linebackers Nick Moody Michael Wilhoite continued his strong play, as he would seem to have all but locked up the primary backup linebacker role. Moody was rather quiet on Sunday, but Wilhoite continues to look strong in place of Patrick Willis. The team expects Willis back by Week 1, although Willis would not go quite that far in discussing his return.

49ERS PLACE MICHAEL CRABTREE, MARIO MANNINGHAM ON PUP LIST

A Look Back at 2012 Antonio Gates caught seven touchdown passes to raise his career total to 83 and became the franchises all-time leader in that category, surpassing Hall of Fame wide receiver Lance Alworth. Gates extended his streak of at least seven touchdown catches to nine seasons. Philip Rivers passed for 3,606 yards and 26 touchdowns to extend his team-record streaks of 3,500-yards passing and 25 touchdowns to five seasons. Only five quarterbacks in NFL history can claim five or more consecutive seasons with at least 25 touchdown passes. That list includes Peyton Manning (1998-2012), Brett Favre (1994- 98), Dan Marino (1984-88), Drew Brees (2006-12) and Aaron Rodgers (2008-12). Rivers also passed John Hadls career yardage total during the season to become the second-most prolific passer in team history. Rivers finished the season with the NFLs seventh-best completion percentage (64.1) and he is the teams career leader in that category (63.6).

49ERS VS. VIKINGS: DEFENSE ARROW UP, ARROW DOWN AS NFL ROSTER CUTS GO DOWN

Wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham stayed on the physically-unable-to-prepare list while five others remained on the non-football-injury list: running back Marcus Lattimore, cornerback Eric Wright, offensive tackle Luke Marquardt and defensive tackles Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial. Wright was seen doing individual conditioning on a side field for the first time since being signed Aug. 8. He had been dealing with a personal issue. Defensive tackles Lawrence Okoye and Lamar Divens were waived injured, allowing the 49ers to put them on injured reserve if they clear waivers. Okoye, the London native who's new to football, is on crutches because of a knee sprain from Sunday's game. "Relax people I'm going on IR," Okoye tweeted. Divens' injury is unknown. Cornerback Chris Culliver went on injured reserve, as expected after his season-ending knee injury Aug.
