Pacific Rim Review! (By The Schmoes)

Are you subscribed to The Schmoes on Youtube? No?

Well hello Schmoeville! Your old pal Kristian here. Mark and I saw Pacific Rim last night and we had to get the review up here ASAP! Monsters, Robots ..I mean, just watch the review, you should be able to see if we were excited or not:

KRISTIAN: Perhaps the ultimate summer season film has arrived with "Pacific Rim" it's big robots fighting bigger monsters, and luckily it's as much fun as it sounds. Guillermo del Toro, director of such imagination-heavy fare as "Pan's Labyrinth" and the "Hellboy" films, utilizes the biggest budget he's ever been granted and creates some of the most incredible visuals ever captured on screen. The story is one that's been done before, the hot-shot pilot getting one more shot at redemption when it matters most. In this case, it's Charlie Hunnam as a former Jaeger pilot ("jaegers" are the gigantic robots humanity built to defeat alien creatures emerging from the ocean) who is called back into action when it seems as though humanity's time on Earth is up. While Hunnam appears to be a star in the making, Idris Elba is the best (human) performance as the seasoned veteran marshalling all forces for one last strike against the alien powers. Naturally, not every subplot is all that necessary and the script can get a bit sloppy, but you pay to see a movie like this for the incredible action and effects, and it doesn't disappoint. Seeing this beast in IMAX/3D is the way to go; monsters fighting robots in the wrong hands can be a gigantic let down but with del Toro at the helm, it becomes the quintessential summer movie experience.

SCORE: 4/5 SCHMOES

MARK: Even with all the hours I've logged at the movies since the inception of "Schmoes Know" and after suffering more than a few big-budget disappoinments ("Optimus!!!"), I'm still a sucker who can't help but get jacked when I hear about a movie featuring robots fighting monster aliens. And I'm happy to report that with "Pacific Rim", my high hopes were met and that my most anticipated movie of the summer did not disappoint. When huge aliens emerge from the Pacific Rim (hey that's the title!), humanity engineered giant robots piloted by humans to supress the threat. However the scary "kaijas" have recently taken the upper hand, and now it's up to Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and friends to mount one final attack with the robotic Jaegers to win the day. These battle scenes are as epic as epic gets I had a huge smile on my face and would actually giggle at some of the incredible visuals entering my four-eyes of vision. The story is decent enough; of course there's some "Independence Day"-style humor that sometimes hits, other times not so much and some storylines (sadly one with Ron Perlman) are useless, but it's of no consequence. Who has time to worry about the little things when there's robots fighting monsters! And unlike some huge "blockbusters" of recent years (hey there, "Transformers 3"!), these battle scenes flow well and never lose the audience in a sea of unrecognizable effects. We can follow the action, whether it flies into the clouds or below the deepest ocean crevice. And when Guillermo del Toro gets the freedom to transfer so much from his increbidle imagination onto the IMAX screen, I would follow it anywhere. It's already taken his fans to Hell and back and now with "Pacific Rim" it gives summer audiences a jumbo-size slice of Heaven.

SCORE: 4.1/5 SCHMOES
