Movie news, NFLers chasing chickens and Hurricane Sandy damage art

- The champion at the box office this weekend is no surprise. Hugh Jackman and "The Wolverine" slashed the rest of the field with a $55 million opening-weekend haul to earn back a large chunk of the film's $120 million budget. "The Conjuring" lost its top spot and finished second with $22.1 million, which is still more than its budget ($20 million) and elevates its cumulative domestic tally to $83.8 million. "Despicable Me 2" also dropped one spot and ranked third with $16 million and has brought in $306.4 million in one month of release. "Turbo" was the second animated movie with a top-five finish, placing fourth and adding $13.3 million to its overall total for a $55.7 million bank roll in two weeks. Somehow, people went to see "Grown Ups 2" for a third straight weekend and virtually ensured there will be an even crappier "Grown Ups 3" in a couple of years by padding the film's total earnings with $11.5 million for a three-week tally of $101.6 million. The geezer action heroes of "Red 2" made $9.4 million for the frame and have scored $35.1 million in the film's first two weeks. "Pacific Rim" snagged seventh place with $7.5 million and its run continues to fall short of the mark with $84 million in domestic earnings through three weeks against the backdrop of a $190 million budget. "The Heat" hung around the top 10 for another weekend, bringing in $6.8 million and upping its five-week total to $141.2 million. "R.I.P.D." was terrible once more, making a mere $5.8 million and stumbling to a two-week bank roll of $24.3 million with a $130 million budget hanging over its head. "Fruitvale Station" rode plenty of positive buzz to tenth place despite remaining in limited release. It made $4.6 million even though its showed in a mere 1,064 theaters and has earned $6.3 million in three weeks. "World War Z" (No. 12) and "Monsters University" tumbled out from last weekend's top 10

- So, how is that quest for tolerance and racial understanding going, world? Before answering that question, take a quick look at Italy, where the country's first black minister made a speech over the weekend and had an ass hat in the crowd show an immense amount of class by throwing bananas at her. Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge is originally from Democratic Republic of Congo and she spoke at a rally in Cervia in central Italy on Friday. The bananas came hurtling toward the stage but missed their target. It is a continuation of the bigotry Kyenge has faced since joining the government. She has faced almost daily racial slurs and threats and earlier this month, the anti-immigration Northern League party likened her to an orangutan. Oh, and there was the enlightened local Northern League councilor who said Kyenge should be raped so she understands how victims of crimes committed by immigrants feel. That tool has received a suspended jail sentence and a temporary ban from public office. Prior to Friday's event, members of the far-right Forza Nuova group left mannequins covered in fake blood near the site of the Democratic Party rally in protest against Kyenge's proposal to make anyone born on Italian soil a citizen. The group also distributed leaflets with the slogan "Immigration kills." Italian police are seeking the banana thrower, but Forza Nuova has denied responsibility. Kyenge tweeted about the thrown banana, calling it "sad" and a waste of food. "The courage and optimism to change things has to come above all from the bottom up to reach the institutions," she added. Several top government officials expressed support for Kyenge and condemnation of the incident on Saturday and Environment Minister Andrea Orlando tweeted that he felt "utmost indignation for this lowly act" against his fellow minister

Is being a girl a crime?.... a curse for the family?

I was watching a short film by Evan Grae Davis titled "It's a girl". According to him these are the 3 deadliest words in the world. He reinforces what I know just like millions ofwomen around the globe. Also, he talks about what women face in today's liberalised, privatised and globalised world. Oh, we have made moon almost our second home. We are reaching out to the other planets to find if life is possible there. In fact women, women of Indian origin have captained some of these projects. This is reality, there's reality of another kind too, the reality of female infanticide, gendercide and violence against women.

A WOMAN faces this violence right from the time she is in her mother's womb in the form of Female infanticide . Gendercide is a major concern in countries like China and India. The male to female ratio is as low as 120:100. Evan Grae Davis is a film maker and has been travelling around the world. He knows many unbelievable facts and has statistics to support them. He talks about a woman in South India who was married off to her brother in law as her sister could not bear a male child. She in turn had girl child one after the other. She killed the child right after her birth and did this 8 times. She showed the small heaps of soil where she had buried her children in the field close to her house. She had no emotions forget showing any regret while talking about the issue. But she touches us with the harsh reality of a woman's life especially in developing countries and among the less privilege. She says that she did not want her children to have a life like her own. Davis says that this story moved him the most, he felt shock and hurt.

A Love Letter toPok mon Red and Blue

With theof a brand spanking new pair of Pok mon games, Black 2 and White 2, Nintendo's Pocket Monsters are back in the media spotlight. I'm sure there are adults and kids out there whose first foray into the Pok mon series was with the original Black and White on the Nintendo DS, but I bet a large number of those people don't realize the humble origins of the series. They have a staggering 649 Pok mon now, did you know that? The series has certainly come a long way since its release over 10 years ago, but it's lost none of its addictive charm. Let's go back in time; back to the beginning.

Let me tell you why I love Pok mon Red and Blue.

Walter White is not a badass.

Breaking Bad is coming back. At long last, the story of Walter White is coming to an end. I could not be more excited and neither could you. Unless, of course, you haven't watched the show yet. Let me be clear about this right up front: I make frequent, wholehearted recommendations to watch Breaking Bad on a fairly regular basis in my day-to-day life (as of approximately one year ago, when I began watching). Whenever people drop a casually cynical "TV just sucks nowadays", this show is my go-to counter-argument. It's a laser-focused, filler-free character study concerned entirely with its own artful and carefully crafted depiction of one man's slow yet steady self-destrucion. It's also one of the most important shows of the last decade. If you've been following some of the other stuff I've written around here, you know that I'm a sucker for moral ambiguity. Well, that's kind of Breaking Bad's entire thing, so naturally I ate it up.

ALL RIGHT, ENOUGH GUSHING. I AM PROBABLY GOING TO SPOIL QUITE A BIT ABOUT BREAKING BAD IN THE FOLLOWING ENTRY. TO THAT END, I'D ADVISE YOU TO STOP READING NOW IF YOU'RE NOT UP-TO-DATE OR IF YOU JUST DON'T CARE (NOTE: YOU SHOULD CARE). STILL WITH ME? LAST CHANCE.

The Matrix is a

The Matrix is a 1999 American-Australian science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis and starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, and Hugo Weaving. It depicts a dystopian future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality called "the Matrix", created by sentient machines to subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Computer programmer "Neo" learns this truth and is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, which involves other people who have been freed from the "dream world".

The Matrix is known for popularizing a visual effect known as "bullet time", in which the heightened perception of certain characters is represented by allowing the action within a shot to progress in slow-motion while the camera's viewpoint appears to move through the scene at normal speed. The film is an example of the cyberpunk science fiction genre.[3] It contains numerous references to philosophical and religious ideas, and prominently pays homage to works such as Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation[4] and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Wachowskis' approach to action scenes drew upon their admiration for Japanese animation[5] and martial arts films, and the film's use of fight choreographers and wire fu techniques from Hong Kong action cinema was influential upon subsequent Hollywood action film productions.

The Matrix was first released in the United States on March 31, 1999, and grossed over $460 million worldwide. It was generally well-received by critics,[6][7] and won four Academy Awards as well as other accolades including BAFTA Awards and

Amiculus: A History For The Underdog

By Travis Horseman

If there's one clichabout history we all know, it's that it's written by "winners." The "losers" in any conflict are left to suck it up as these "winners," deserving or not, get to decide how they are portrayed for the rest of time. Rightly or wrongly, history's losers are deviants, freaks, weaklings, monsters, and basic illegitimates who seemed to have been begging for the "winners" to overthrow their asses long before it happened. Who they actually were gets tossed aside, and their voices, their opinions, their side of the story, is lost forever.

Sean Bean Midsummer Update

It's been a quiet few months since the flurry of spring news, so I thought I'd write a bit of an update for ongoing & upcoming things.

The most immediate is the imminent premiere of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the sequel to The Lightning Thief. In it, Sean reprises his role as Zeus. He still has billing credit so hopefully he didn't end up on the cutting room floor! I have not seen him in the featurette. I've scoured every trailer & advert released looking for a glimpse of him, so far, nothing yet. If invited I expect Sean will go to at least 1 of the world premieres.

Review of Anthes, "Frankenstein's Cat"

FRANKENSTEIN'S CAT: CUDDLING UP TO BIOTECH'S BRAVE NEW BEASTS by Emily Anthes(Scientific American/Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, 2013).

This book is light, but good (nice summer reading, perhaps). The topic is technology and our genetic cousins (mainly animals), including genetic and transgenetic manipulations, including cloning, and on- and in-the-body sensing and effectors. The book gives a quick and shallow tour of recent examples of applying biotech to modify and manipulate the body and mind of animals. But the technology itself isn't covered in detail (though there are plenty of notes).

MARK AND SARAH TOGETHER AGAIN!This weekend there's a convention called Fandom Fest held in KY. A few of my friends are working as vendors at this pretty cool event, and even though I've heard mixed reviews about the show's outcome over the past twenty-four hours, my heart was warmed when my friend Kristy Jett posted this photo on my Facebook page this morning.

Yep, it's a mini Waxwork reunion!

From Sailor Moon to Pretear: In Defense of Shoujo

I've been working on this post forever! I figured it's time to finally give up on the editing I keep saying I'm going to do and just put it up already.

When I gave up on my haircutting phase, I grew up from an obnoxious kid into a silly teenage girl. And like most other silly (nerdy) teenage girls I wanted to wake up one morning transformed into an extremely beautiful magical girl so I could go into the world and fight evil-preferably with a super handsome magical protector by my side. We would of course fall desperately in love as I lay in his arms wounded after a fight and his love would give me the will to continue living in spite of the dire circumstances. After I magically recovered my strength, I would go on to slay the "boss monster" or complete my final quest. Then my magical, super handsome protector and I would live happily ever after.

"This is your fault." Charlie stabs her finger harder on the horn and glares death through the windshield at the horse eating grass in the middle of the road. The horse doesn't move and the horn is probably the only part of the car that actually works. "Roads should not have grass growing up in the middle of them. Take the back roads, you said. It's more interesting, you said. If I wanted to get closer to nature I'd go to a zoo or watch a movie."

How it Got Burned: The Making of Iron Man 3

SOMETIME IN 2012: MARVEL/DISNEY STUDIOS BACKLOT: ~~ All right gang, we're making Iron Man 3 now, but there's one problem. We don't have a villain! I say we use Madame Masque. I've wanted to see her for a long time, and I know just the person to play her: Eva Longoria. That actually doesn't sound like bad casting based on what I just pulled up on an image search.Hee Hee. Yes. I had no idea you were such a comics fan. Huh? Comics fan? I only knew about her from some article in Wizard back in 2005 which said Eva Longoria should play Madame Masque. Why do you care so much then? Because *I* want to see if she *ahem* measures up for the part in my office . That's all you ever think about isn't it? Sexist pig. Huh Huh. Yeah Anyway, Madame Masque is a sexist outdated character who is based on stereotypes of women being vain and concerned with their looks, and as the chief of Hollywood's PC police, I feel such an offensive character should never be used, because I respect women. I wouldn't want my daughter to see a movie featuring such a character. I want her to have the best childhood and-- Daddy please---all I want is five bucks so I can buy a new blankie at the dollar store, it's cold down there in the cellar and my blankie has holes in it because of the rats please GET OUT OF MY OFFICE AND BACK IN THE TRUNK YOU LITTLE BITCH!!!!!!

Today's movie review is my second one.

Music and Misdirection

As of episode 9 of Rahxephon, it seems that the established traditional super-robot arc is coming to an end; the mysteries about the supernatural, anti-technological aspects are coming to the fore and it is reveals there is something significant about Quan as well as Reika. In some ways the dream episode just seen could be unsatisfying; there is a mixture of pouring new mysteries onto those that are still not fully known, and almost-straightforward expository revelations. Yet this ambiguity - the way in which simply explaining something has been subverted by the cast - is ultimately the driving force of the plot.

A common theme in super-robot animis that of the voyage of self-discovery, or the coming-of-age story; this is in essence a holdover from its more superhero-esque roots. What the duty of fighting in a robot achieves is providing structure and responsibility for the pilot, who often begins as rebellious or unsuited to fighting. This comes with their learning both about the machine they pilot and its conflicts - the enemies and so on - but also about how important their job is and how they must develop as a person. In the simplest sense this is a kind of bravado or machismo, the archetypal "fighting spirit" theme where determination and aggression wins out over trickery. Yet Rahxephon quite opposes this; Ayato is never given the chance to improve via teaching because there is no knowledgeable base for him to start from or learn from. TERRA keep him as in the dark as possible because it suits their agenda, and as Episode 9 s scenes involving Makoto and Kisaragi suggested, humanity simply does not understand the Rahxephon. Ayato is pressing into unknown territory in piloting it and so his relationship with it - and its relationship with society - is skewed. The scientific, technological super-robot, built perhaps with not quite understood science but nevertheless designed, is something that can be developed and controlled. It is when the provenance of the robot is unknown, and its abilities are secret, that the pilot's journey is redefined.

Partying like it's...1993

Last night, I started thinking how I haven't done a "re-watch" in a while. I mean, a legit start to finish on a show. I watch old shows all the time. I have an almost embarrassingly huge collection of television shows on DVD. Plus a few more newer ones on iTunes. And amongst those I have a few go-to episodes that I tend to watch over and over again. So what I actually decided to do was watch TWO things. It's weird, The X-Files has been EVERYWHERE on my social media for the last week and change because this fall is the 20th anniversary of its premiere and it was featured at Comic-Con. And I was really thinking about 20 years ago, because last weekend was also my high school 20th reunion. I didn't go to it, but I've REALLY been remembering 20 years ago because of it. As I walked to the shelves with the TV DVDs for some reason my eye was drawn to Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. And I realized that is ALSO premiered 20 years ago (or thereabouts) and that it was, in fact, the OTHER show that I watched on Sunday nights in college. So, I'm going to watch both. It's an interesting juxtaposition. They were both huge nerd draws. The X-Files still very much is, I think. Lois & Clark ran for four seasons and a total of 87 episodes. It was fairly light-hearted and embraced the comic-y side of the Superman mythos. And by that I mean the old school comic-y side. It was almost cartoonish in moments and had a pretty loyal following although it was never a ratings boom. Even at its very most serious it wasn't particularly deep. Even though it dealt with a subject that was so ingrained in the public consciousness, it took it from a completely different angle. What I loved about it was that that the guiding premise (and I'm going to quote Clark Kent on the show here) was "Clark is who I am. Superman is what I do." Which was a sharp contrast to the Superman films that I had watched as a kid. Because it focused on Clark, I think it was a great way to shine a light on other characters--if it's always Superman, it's always Superman and the Big Bad--specifically, in this case, Clark and his relationship with his parents was so cute and fun and depth-filled. I have a hands-down favorite episode, "Tempus Fugitive" from the second season (which is probably the best season as well) and having so clear a favorite episode is weird for me. Sadly the show was never able to produce great ratings (although Teri Hatcher became one of the first internet phenomenons because of it. And being a smoking hot babe). It ended on a cliffhanger and then didn't get picked up for a fifth season. The X-Files was different. It was a phenomenon. It was HUGE. It ran for 9 seasons and a total of 202 episodes plus two feature films and two spin-off series. So many aspects--"I Want to Believe", "The Truth is out there.", the theme song, the characters themselves--became so hugely iconic (I can name off the top of my head it being explicitly referenced by both Bones and Castle) that it's sometimes hard to remember a time when it and references to it weren't a part of our cultural vernacular. Filmed for the first four seasons in dank, rainy Vancouver, it couldn't possibly be any visually different from L&C and while there were any number of stand-alone/Monster of the Week episodes that were just plain funny, they were also sophisticated and even if verging on the silly, very, very clever. The episodes that weren't the "comedy" episodes were dark. ALL of the mytharc episodes were dark and the stand-alones that were dark were freakishly dark and sometimes absolutely terrifying. Like L&C, it was part of the first wave of internet fandom although rather than a picture of Teri Hatcher rolling around scantily clad and wrapped in a Superman cape, with The X-Files it as EVERYTHING. Message boards full of speculation and episode discussion and fanfiction. This is a fandom who created the idea and terms of "shipping" and "shippers", for God's sake. The last two seasons were shaky--mainly because David Duchovny was absent from about half the episodes of the 8th season and all but the final episode of the 9th season--but they finished with at least a respectable amount of closure and enough ongoing interest for there to be a second movie and continued speculation about a third. I've watched both pilots. My thoughts to follow.

The Mutations (1974)

Reflecting its storyline about a mad scientist who gene-splices people and plants to create monsters, this lurid UK flick offers two movies for the price of one. The putative main story is an unintentionally hilarious stinker, with Donald Pleasance phoning in his bad-guy performance while the film's special-effects team delivers laughably bad monster costumes. However, a major subplot about the mad scientist's deformed henchman has a certain degree of pathos and suspense, especially because the subplot borrows many elements from the 1932 cult classic Freaks. Set in modern-day England, The Mutations stars Pleasance as Professor Nolter, a psycho who envisions a new race of humans imbued with plant characteristics. Nolter's accomplice is Lynch (Tom Baker), a deformed giant who abducts young men and women for Nolter to use as test subjects. Lynch is the leader of a group of circus freaks living at an amusement park, yet while the other circus performers are harmless, Lynch is a self-loathing psychotic. Thus, while Nolter tempts fate by taking his experiments too far, Lynch is driven to madness by waiting for Nolter to deliver on promises of correcting Lynch's deformity. (The picture also features perfunctory material involving attractive students either investigating the disappearances of their classmates or becoming victims of Nolter's weird science.)As helmed by Jack Cardiff, a master cinematographer who occasionally directed, The Mutations has a colorful look and one or two genuinely creepy scenes, notably the Freaks-influenced conclusion of Lynch's storyline. The acting is generally bland, but Baker (beloved by many for his long run on the UK TV series Doctor Who) does well playing Lynch in the Vincent Price mode of a killer besieged by inner demons. The film's other noteworthy performance comes from the diminutive Michael Dunn, familiar to American TV fans for his work as Dr. Loveless on the '60s show The Wild Wild West. He plays the little person who represents the conscience of the circus-freak community. Furthermore, starlets including the scrumptious Julie Ege provide major eye candy while clothed and otherwise, and The Mutationsbenefits from an eerie music score that utilizes dissonant classical music--a truly unsettling flourish. FYI, The Mutations sometimes carries the alternate title The Freakmaker.

Better than last week but still so bored.

Displease and updates

Hey readers! What's up!(: Just gonna start of by updating abit on what i have been doing recently and why can't you find my Facebook account. Firstly, i have been really busy with my school work , tuitions, tests, and for my anniversary with my dear boyfriend. Really lots of upcoming tests and haven really got a chance to rest and to take a break from anything. That is also why i did not have the time to blog. The next thing is about my FACEBOOK ACCOUNT! So, some of you may wonder why my Facebook account went missing, or just can't seems to find.

Reason being:

Listen to this episode2 Guys, One 12 Pack

Uncle Swoop and E ponder on movie franchises that should have been extended. E says that he would have like to seen a sequel to "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas". Swoop asks if it would be about Hunter S. Thompson's suicide. E says that Thompson wanted to die on his own terms. Uncle Swoop says that he feels "the Rum Diary" was a prequel.

Uncle Swoop says there should be a sequel to "The Brotherhood of Justice". E recounts the shower seen where they think someone taking a shower during the day equates to drug use.

That Would Be A Stretch. Also, Maybe You Should Get Some Chips And A Bum Pillow; This Is A Long One.

DIE MONSTER DIE, FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD,

The Killing's Peter Sarsgaard Previews a Seward-Linden Showdown as the Execution Clock Ticks

The journey of death-row inmate Ray Seward (Peter Sarsgaard) on Season 3 of has been peppered with difficult questions: Did he really murder his wife? If not, then why hasn't he been more forthcoming about it -- and who actually dunnit? And, with the clock running down toward Ray's execution date, can Detectives Linden and Holder tie Tricia Seward's death to the murder of at least 17 runaway girls in the Seattle area -- and buy Ray some more time in the process? Many of those questions get answered during the season's penultimate episode -- "Six Minutes" -- a tense and harrowing hour of television that airs Sunday at 9/8c on AMC and takes place almost entirely inside the prison walls. TVLine caught up with Sarsgaard to discuss Ray's Season 3 journey, the intricacies of shooting the pivotal episode, and the chance to finally engage in some extended screentime with costar Mireille Enos.

'Adventure Time Encyclopaedia' first look, book trailer, launch party

"The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia," purportedly penned by the cartoon's Lord of Evil Hunson Abadeer, begins with a warning.

"Only bona fide demons from the Nightosphere, heroes with extreme charisma, wizards with abominable powers, and awesome kingly or queenly individuals may read further," reads a page of large, capital letters. "All unqualified readers -- including humans, mutants, monsters, talking beasts, house people, gnomes and goblins, mountain men, lumps, witches, ninjas, hoboes, ghosts, scofflaws, insolent children, boring schoolteachers, nosy parents, and other unqualified beings -- will be punished by the Spell of Carnak invoked upon this book."

First Look at Kamen Rider Gaim

Kamen Rider Gaim is an upcoming Japanese tokusatsu drama in the Kamen Rider Series, the 15th series during it's Heisei run and 24th overall. Trademarks on the title were requested in May 2013, and the show was officially announced on July 25, 2013. It will be broadcast on TV Asahi starting October 6, 2013, a week following the finale of the show's predecessor Kamen Rider Wizard, and it will join Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger in the Super Hero Time block. The catchphrase of the series is "Rider Warring States Period".

In the world of Kamen Rider Gaim, because of a large company known as Yggdrasil Corporation setting up a shop in a once busting city, it now feels like everyone is living in a castle town. To escape this feeling, young people throughout the city have formed dance crews to bring joy back into their lives. Also popular is a game that uses Lockseeds that contain small animals known as Invase that are said to come from another dimension. However, as this game becomes more and more popular, it seems to be causing tears in reality to an actual alternate dimension from which monsters are invading the Earth.

As I am entering my final vacation week before heading back out to sea, so many things have happened, and I have some new exciting news to send your way. I did not expect to be on vacation this long, but I am loving every extra minute I have had to spend with friends and family!

Immediately landing on the mainland, my mom and I headed out for a mother daughter getaway. Our destination was The Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Missouri. Within twenty-four hours I had gone from a ocean and mountain view to a lake and hill view. While some would see that as a downgrade, you must keep in mind that I left my dark inside room for a room with a balcony! Yep, that is right, fresh air flowing through my room! We met up with Mark, Jonathan, Christian and Taylor for lunch, and went to their show that evening. I promise my mom really was there. She is just the anti-picture type. It is like a preacher's kid that is known for rebelling. The photographer's mom refuses to be in photos.

5 {Good} Reasons to Make Healthy Choices While Young

If I've heard it once, I've heard it a million times: "Health is fine for you, but I just want to have fun right now. I'll worry about it later when I'm old and sickly, if I live that long. I feel good right now." Working in a health food and supplement store for the past 5 years, talking to many, many people about their choices and conditions, it seems that the majority of people are only concerned with short-term benefits. If it works NOW, they'll buy it again and again, instead of spending just a little more and reaping long-term benefits, saving money in the long-run, and actually addressing the real problem. The "NOW" attitude is hard to shake, and I see many middle-aged customers carrying this mind-set from their childhood, when perhaps they thought that "worrying" about health simply wasn't something they wanted to "constrict" their lifestyle with. Whatever the reason for health neglect, they're reaping the consequences now. "Feeling good" in your teen and young adult years is no assurance of a care-free tomorrow. Let's look at five reasons (with science to back them up) why you should consider making healthy choices as soon as possible. I'll also help you get started with a few suggestions, and list a few tried-and-true supplements you may find helpful.

Blogger Book Fair Day 5

For todays I have Alberta Ross. All of Alberta's books are available for free on this week for the . Today we have Alberta's 10 things that have surprised her most about becoming an author. Also I am featured on Alberta's blog talking about the 10 things people don't know about me. !

HERE IS ALBERTA'S 10 THINGS THAT HAVE SURPRISED HER THE MOST ABOUT BECOMING AN AUTHOR:

Classic TV: 5-paragraph review of 'Crime Story' pilot

Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2: "Pilot"

ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Sept. 18, 1986

In August, Join the HarmonQuest!

Dan Harmon has solidified himself as a god among geeks. From the various parodies on Community, he's shown us that he's no stranger to the stuff we all love. He's also a huge fan of fantasy gaming, evidenced by the D&D episode, as well as every single week on his . Now, he's letting everybody share in his love of these games and movies with a month-long takeover of Los Angeles' Cinefamily with HARMONQUEST, co-presented by Nerdist Industries and Starburns Industries.

Dan can't do this alone, so he's recruited a Fellowship of friends, like Patton Oswalt, Chris Hardwick, Blake Anderson, Rob Schrab, and Phil Tippett, to help him bridge the chasm of Film and Fantasy. At each of the eight separate events, Harmon will host live role-playing game sessions followed by a sword-and-sorcery movie of his choosing. This will also be your first opportunity to see , the Dungeons & Dragons movie, which is the first film to be distributed by Nerdist Industries and Tribeca Films.

Snarked! Vol. 1-3

And so it was that Roger Langridge thought he would tell a tale.

He'd draw some pretty pictures and then put it up for sale.

He'd write some funny characters and put them all in peril.

Ongoing Investigations: Case #223

Recently the manga came to an end. It was just a series we randomly decided to watch during the on the off-chance it might be enjoyable. But since then it has become a staple of my comedy manga diet along with and . But it seems just as quickly as I found the series I discovered it was coming to an end. Overall 15 volumes is hardly a series cut short. But when you enjoy something like this it seems to come and go in the blink of an eye.

But in the end that might be for the best. 15 volumes distinctly lets the plot play out nicely with some mystery involving why Sakura has all the fortune energy she does. The pace let each story arc have a big reveal towards slowly butsurely building up Ikari and Kana's story and then how it fits in the present. When Ikari is finally revealed he does not seem to be teased for too long but at the same time he does not just pop up out of nowhere.

The Top 5

The other night my I had an interesting conversation with my good friend about who the top 5 wrestlers of all time are.

Obviously any list of this nature is an opinion only, with the fact that some people have all time favorites that didn't last long or that weren't transcendent but rather, they just were a personal favorite. For me, Kevin Fertig (who first did the Mordecai and then the Kevin Thorn characters in WWE) would fall into that category.

It's a Jane Austen World After All (Part 23)

Here is the next list of modern-day writers who, in their own way, have paid homage to Jane Austen's legendary stories. Each of the authors listed below have written (or edited) three books inspired or added more books to their list of books inspired by the classic characters created by the one and only Jane Austen.

Green Bay Packers Thrilled to Get Rookie Datone Jones Signed

GREEN BAY PACKERS: DEFENSE NEEDS TO REPLACE NASTY AT LINEBACKER

The defensive end is set to make $7.7 million over four years with a team option for a fifth year. He will receive roughly $4 million in terms of a signing bonus while he is guaranteed $6.3 million. Hopefully, Jones will become the player everyone in and around the organization knows he can be so that he can earn a much bigger contract, such as what Clay Matthews accomplished this summer. His personal success will immediately transition over to the team, as he will be a critical piece to get the defense performing at a high level. It may take some time to get going, but there is no question he must turn into an elite player over the next few years in order for the Packers to get back on top. Green Bay needs him to be a top-notch pass rusher to go along with Matthews and outside linebacker Nick Perry. They also need him to be effective in the run game. Jones posted 62 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks while suiting up for UCLA in 2012. The Packers will need him to put up monster numbers in his rookie season, while he will have to consistently attack the quarterback with the same intensity that Matthews does. There is a lot riding on what Jones will be able to do along the defensive line, which certainly puts on added pressure. However, if he wants to help Green Bay win another Super Bowl he will have to be everything the Packers expect right out of the gate.

Comic Con 2013: The Celebrities

It's a well-known fact that in the span of about thirty years, the San Diego Comic Con has grown from basically a swap-meet in the basement of a hotel drawing around 500 to one of the biggest pop culture events of the calendar year, with crowds estimated at around 140 000. Comic Con has always been a great avenue for fans to meet creators, to get a photo or autograph from someone whose work you've always admired from afar. Hollywood has of course realised the potential of marketing to this crowd and it is a great that these days, movies based on comic books are doing gangbusters. It certainly wasn't always like this. The more cynical might say that it's become overly-commercialised and that the "comic" aspect of "Comic Con" isn't the focus any longer. However, there's no denying the thrill in being among the first to see exclusive footage, or to get a glimpse of a mega star in the flesh. And there's of course the infamous long, long line for Hall H, which some queue up for overnight to enter. Here are some of the celebrities who turned out this year.

Comic Con 2013: The Booths/Exhibits

The convention floor is a wonderland. A congested wonderland packed with people, lines for all manner of things and plenty of jostling, but a wonderland nonetheless. Each and every exhibitor wants to put on a good show, and everybody from the local toy shop to up and coming artists to Hollywood mega-studios has a presence on the floor in some form or another. And it doesn't stop at the convention centre: the Gaslamp district and the area nearby was home to lots of surprises this year, including a tent housing props, costumes and sets from Ender's Game and the spectacular Godzilla encounter, part museum and part theme park attraction to build hype for next year's Godzilla film.

Why 'The To Do List' Is a Must-See For '90s Music Fans

The 1990s were a very distinct decade in music - Seattle became the birth place of grunge, putting on a memorable live performance became just as important as releasing an amazing album, and boy bands dominated the end of the decade with a fever pitch that reverberates to this day (see: ). The 1990s also saw a number of movies with fantastic soundtracks that truly represented the decade (Singles, Clueless, Can't Hardly Wait), but THE TO DO LIST is one of the first films to come out in the aftermath of the '90s that takes audiences right back to the days of Naughty By Nature, The Cranberries, Mazzy Star, and Salt-n-Pepa.

The soundtrack for The To Do List is, as one would imagine, filled with "sexy" songs which play to the plot of the film which has Brandy Klark (AUBREY PLAZA) running through a laundry list of sexual exploits with a laser focus on losing her virginity before heading off to college. While the soundtrack is certainly tongue-in-cheek, the film takes things one step further by choosing to have two of its characters also reflect the music scene that permeated this decade.

So what gives me the right to give parenting advice.Probably nothing. But I do knoware the only solution to our current epidemic of chronic disease and obesity. And as my facebook newsfeed reminds me on a daily basis, people my age are now starting families (even though I'm pretty sure we were all just 18 last year, right??).I once thought I wanted to be a pediatric dietitian, you know, before I realized children are terrifying screaming monsters.During that time, I did a decent amount of research on how to raise healthy eaters and promote a normal relationship with food.

Kaiju Dreaming

With(2013) completely capturing my full attention of late, I can only tell you that I have high standards, high hopes and high expectations to be filled for the latest attempt at Godzilla. My hope is to be as equally enthusiastic about director Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA (2014) next summer after seeing it as I have been for PACIFIC RIM.I don't think that's unfair or too much to ask.

Outside of Japan they just haven't got the BIG G right and hopefully they will have learned a few things from director Guillermo del Toro's approach to kaiju cinema as a fan of these pictures.Equally so, one would imagine Edwards has learned from the massive mistakes made on Roland Emmerich's GODZILLA (1998) as well - for example, at the very least look a bit like the classic monster.

India Arie

God put some shit on my plate all through the night. It was like a brazilian wax. It was the emotional equivalent of having any hair removed from around my asshole. It was a sharp ripping pain in a place I usually don't violate. What started out as an open letter of admiration to 'the original sweater boy' was some how twisted into something so offense he called me a sea slut. All mermaids are sea sluts. I gave you happiness in a factory and you mocked my entire existence. You then told me I'm a facebook fairytale and you refuse to chase windmills. welcome to the modern world and airplanes that fly through the sky. they land in places where you live. If you needed real life I could give that to you.

I know it doesn't matter if I see you, or touch you. I have your mind to communicate with. I also have a really great voice that you don't remember. And telling a girl you 'don't remember the sound of her voice' is just a hateful thing I wouldn't think you'd be mean enough to say. I don't remember the sound of your voice. If you expressed interested in me nothing you said would make me actually tell you I don't remember. I don't have a mean streak. It frankly makes me think of a mule. I'm going to work the analogy because after you I talked to the boy in olympia actually managed to be a bigger mule than you. I was going to go to church but I realize you can't break me twice in one night. I was a pony that chose to carry the weight of two mules. I feel like I have a broken spirit. Some people would say that church is where I need to be. It's simple if I see the preacher wife's face I'm going to want to hit her so bad. Her ability to get under my skin is mind boggling. I have so much built up aggression I probably shouldn't be allowed a keyboard. I'm going to write.

Having the last laugh is the actual written record that you can hold and touch. I can read this post and remember everything about the night I got so pissed off I forgot it was Saturday night. I have a moment when I think 'pull it together for the kids, you promised them chocolate fucking milk.' I can only say I feel like God let me down. And at this moment, I don't want to rejoice in the Lord. I don't feel like rejoicing. I feel like drinking. I hardly ever drink. Lately, I don't drink at all. I want a Sally Draper drink that is three fourths rum and one fourth diet coke.

Pacific Rim: Why You Should See It This Weekend

With Guillhermo Del Toro's epic monster movie hitting cinemas this weekend, alongside Monsters University in the UK, it's definitely a time to celebrate movie monsters.

And while Pixar's latest will no doubt appeal to younger fans, the reviews of Del Toro's effects-heavy actioner, starring Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam, suggest that it's an incredible in-theatre experience, and one that will likely delight fans of the genre, as well as those who appreciate Del Toro's canon of work.

3 Things We Just Learned About Pixar's 'Inside Out' From Pete Docter

It's hard to believe that we've reached a point where it's surprising to hear about an original movie from PIXAR. Back in 2011 when INSIDE OUT was vaguely , the studio was coming off of Cars 2, and it felt like the sequel obligation behemoth was off their back. Between then and now, follow-ups started to feel like the norm.

Now the path has cleared a bit, and PETE DOCTER's current project is something fresh to get excited about. The filmmaker recently spoke to at the Siggraph CG convention and revealed a few ambitious details about the 2015 animated flick that lives inside the brain space of a little girl.

MAGIC AND MACHINERY

A slight change of plans. As I mentioned in my previous post, I am going to be easing up on the theme of Anime/Manga gaming and just posting whatever I feel like talking about, including Anime/Manga gaming if indeed the mood strikes me. With the generally lackluster response and interest in the subject however, I am loosing steam and my thoughts are drifting to other ideas. I've mentioned this before, it's how my head works. So for now, I did want to show off one of my favorite Japanese Table Top RPGS. A mix of Dungeons and Dragons and Battletech - Medieval Fantasy crossed with Giant Robots. A Study on Anime-Traits in BBC Sherlock

The attempt of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat to retell the story of Sherlock Holmes in modern-day London turned out to be a tremendous success, so tremendous indeed that the series gained popularity all over the world and the hype didn't leave Japan out. On the contrary, a manga series was announced on October 4, 2012 covering the first case "A Study in Pink". Personally, I'm not an expert when it comes to western TV-Series, but as an Anime-addict, I noticed some traits in BBC Sherlock many fellow Otakus are quite familiar with. (I don't think that the series is in any way inspired by the Anime I'll mention later on, yet I found the similarities worthwhile enough to appreciate in this article.)

First: Take a look at some characters and you notice the use of trademarks, for example, Mycroft's umbrella. It is not a rare case to see Anime-Characters that are defined by a certain trademark, a catchphrase ("You see, but you do not observe") or a pose and it is the same in Sherlock. There is, for example, Mycroft's female assistant who is glued on her smart phone almost for her whole screen time. She is no three-dimensional character since her whole character is defined by her smart phone-affinity. Of course, this doesn't apply to Mycroft's penchant for umbrellas. Yet, he is also more of a two- than a three-dimensional character. As Sherlock describes him, "he (Mycroft) practically is the British Government". This means, Mycroft is the representation of governmental authority, the incarnation of the concept of power. Similar characters can be found in Mohiro Kitohs terrific manga "Narutaru" where Naozumi Sudo is the embodiment of nihilism whereas Takeo Tsurumaru represents chaos. One could criticize those characters for being unrealistic, but on the other hand, this is exactly what gives them their iconic value.

The previous description applies to another character, the criminal mastermind, Jim Moriarty. Sherlock once calls him a "spider" in the web of crime. He is able to manipulate it at his will, making him the most dangerous of all criminals. Sounds familiar. In Naoki Urasawa's manga "Monster", the angel-faced psychopath Johan Liebert is the mastermind behind an invisible web of crime that he solely holds in his hands. His character and his objective might differ from Moriarty, but the idea of an invisible web of organized crime created and manipulated by an embodiment of absolute evil is present in both works.

The other game that had featured in the pre-show was the new PES. We already knew that the title wo

that rolled during E3, the pre-show was dry and fast. After talking briefly about social games (including a category called "Social Casino", completely monstercars new to me), the presentation showed the new PES, Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.

The Summer Season of Anime

The summer season of anime this year is really incredible. With such a large fanbase, such powerful series, and addicting shows it is important to know what to watch now, what to watch later, and how to find legal ways to watch them! Today I'll be reviewing two incredibly popular and very different series, Attack on Titan and Free! Iwatobi Swim Club, as well as one upcoming hit - Blood Lad.

Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, is THE hit anime of the year. It is quite simply the most original anime I have ever seen, though it is based on the manga series by Hajime Isayama which was written first.

James McAvoy to Create a Blasphemous Abomination as Dr. Frankenstein

So far the only casting news we've gotten about director PAUL MCGUIGAN's (Lucky Number Slevin) upcoming Frankenstein project has been the delightful decision to make Harry Potter himself, DANIEL RADCLIFFE, grow a hump, drool a bit, and --who's said to be a lead character in this new look at the classic material.

Okay, so maybe the hump and the drool is just speculation at this point, but by all accounts this Max Landis-written (Chronicle) take on the Frankenstein mythos is supposed to have much more in common with what we've seen in monster movies and Halloween decorations over the past fifty years or so than it does with Mary Shelley's more heady and less fun gothic novel that originally created the characters. Given that premise, it stands to reason that another of the film's central characters, the eccentric mad scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein, will likely be a cackling, lab coat-wearing, crazy-eyed fiend. And McGuigan has now found just the actor to play him.

James McAvoy to Play Frankenstein for FOX

Still riding the high from Saturday's basically-every-mutant-ever-reunion at FOX's Hall H panel () it only pleases me more to learn Charles Xavier, the younger, JAMES MCAVOY will play Dr. Victor Von Frankenstein in - surprise! - FOX's FRANKENSTEIN. I wonder how they came upon such a hot, rising young star?

McAvoy will be joining DANIEL RADCLIFFE, already cast as Igor, for the PAUL MCGUIGAN directed adaptation. The nature of this adaptation is still unknown. Will it be farcical, trying to recapture the humor of Young Frankenstein? (Blasphemy!) Or will it try and put an edgier spin on the classic, gothic tale like the unfortunate Van Helsing? Either way, I'm intrigued, if only to see McAvoy and Radcliffe together. And McGuigan is a sublime director, working on pictures like Gangster No. 1 and Lucky Number Slevin as well as several episodes of Sherlock ("A Study in Pink", "The Great Game", "A Scandal in Belgravia", "The Hounds of Baskerville").

James McAvoy To Play Dr. Frankenstein Alongside Daniel Radcliffe

I feel like I've been talking about James McAvoy quite a bit lately.Between his upcoming return as Professor X in Bryan Singer's X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY double feature opposite Jessica Chastain, the actor has kept himself quite busy.Today comes news that the actor has joined yet another high profile project.

McAvoy will star in director Paul McGuigan's upcoming take on the classic Mary Shelley story FRANKENSTEIN as - you guessed it - Dr. Frankenstein. He joins the already-cast Daniel Radcliffe as Frankenstein's assistant Igor.It ends a long and exhaustive search by Twentieth Century Fox to find an actor to play this character, and with McAvoy's string of successes, they must have decided to go with what works.

The return of the Eighth Doctor Who?

Back in 1989, Doctor Who died an awkward silent death on TV. A new series was planned with returning monsters and a new companion, but the program just dispeared. In 1996, a TV Movie closed the era of the Seventh Doctor Who played by Sylvester McCoy and introduced an Eighth Doctor who would echo some of the program's past while paving the way for a big bright future. Unfortunately, that did not happen as the project was less successful than was hoped for.

The Scary Thing Is Pixar Itself (Monsters University)

It's been said before, usually by people much more qualified to say these things than I am, but I'll say it again: Pixar is bent under the weight of our expectations, and we have to step back for a second and remember that they are a business. They need to make money. Hence the sequels. Hence the obvious choices. As much as we have applauded their creativity and style, they still have to turn a profit, and it isn't easy.

That having been said, however, does not excuse them for making Monsters University, a movie so incredibly bland that meatloaf is suing for copyright infringement.

Superhero Comic Books: Where to Begin?

For quite a while now, Superheroes have become big summer staples at the local movie theater. Many of my long time readers may have also read my two series from last year, "Countdown to Avengers" and Road to Rises" focusing on some of the biggest andmost important characters in the DC and Marvel Universe respectively.

Sometime ago I was talking to my best friend on the phone and he was telling me his younger brother was getting interested in some of these superheroes and wasn't sure where to begin. Chances are after seeing the films, or reading my blog series, you've been wondering the same but have found it a daunting task. Just browsing on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, or a local library can leave you exhausted as there are so many graphic novels to choose from. Superman for example just celebrated his 75th anniversary leaving you with a plethora of stories from which to choose. But those just getting into these heroes don't want lots of stories, they just want to start with one. So where to begin?

Favorite 10: Powered Armor

By the topic header, you can guess what the next major topic of discussion that will be appearing on FWS...Powered Armor! Since the establishment of this blog some three years ago, I have yet to discuss powered armor in depth despite beign one of the bedrock concepts in MSF, but that is about to change in the next two weeks. I simply love powered armor and works that feature it. So, before we discuss powered armor ad nauseum, I thought I should cover my top 10 favorite examples of powered armor, giving some frame of reference for my thoughts on the upcoming blogpost. The Powered Armor blogpost should drop in about two weeks, because of the amount research and size of the blogpost. BTW: these suits are in no order of importance. Enjoy!

'47 Ronin' Trailer: New Japanese Fantasy, Same Old Keanu Reeves

Yesterday, the internet was graced with for the KEANU REEVES-starring 47 RONIN. Today, the ante gets significantly upped with the film's first trailer. This first trailer builds up some decent atmosphere in its initial 45 seconds. The film displays its vision of feudal Japan, along with plenty of rich color (plus a giant who looks like he wandered in from 300). Reeves' protagonist seems like a man of few words and fewer smiles - a beaten-down warrior who will rise to greatness.

Then Reeves opens his mouth. With that single, wooden utterance of "why did you come for me," the entire trailer comes crashing down. From here, we're introduced to a cackling, one-note villain and a bevy of middling CGI. Worse still is Reeves, who with every line and every silent stare is less a stony hero and more a version of Neo who seems trapped in the wrong genre.

Pacific Rim Review

At last after waiting an entire year it is finally here! Today we are looking at Pacific Rim! Holy shit I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting for this movie well actually I kind of did but that is beside the point because now its here and by Thor's iron chin its is glorious!

Pacific Rim is directed by Guillermo del Toro who had also directed Pan's Labyrinth and the Hell Boy films which were movies that were dark and surreal in their presentation and tone(The latter being lighter at times) so when I learned some time back that he was making a giant monster movie I was surprised yet excited. Del Toro wanted to create a film that would introduce the genre to a new generation of children while also paying homage to classic Mecha and Kaiju movies and franchises while having its own identity.

Author: Richelle Mead Series: Bloodlines Book Title: The Indigo spell Published: 12 2 2013 alchemist Sydney was responsible for a challenge - keep safe princess Jill in front of people who would want to hurt her because of Lisse. She had to move to Palm Springs and her life was turned upside down quickly. This was the first episode. We know it always responsible, rigorous, rational Sydney, who hated vampires and magic for it was unnatural and wrong. Quite often I compared it with Rose, although actually not much to compare. If an author writes a book where the main characters are different, usually you can see that they have some of the same characteristics. Humor or the way you view the world. Richelle proved anything but revolutionary. She knew she was breaking away from Rose so much that has created an entirely new and interesting character kingo that is already in the first book Bloodlines ranked among my favorites. Numerous authors write one series and another is not so good. Well, maybe VA was better than Bloodlines, but ... 1 ... we are just in the middle of the series kingo and Richelle we may further works very surprised. The VA has the first two parts very amused, everything started then. Neither Richelle is not so good, that all her books at exactly the same level. 2 ... you have to admit, the story is thought out and easy to read. 3 ... There are more Adriana.

"She left the door unlocked. She's practically inviting us in.." Even now I can remember the moment when I am The Indigo Spell inserted into the reader and immediately embarked on reading. Kamo ka I then laughed and said she vy kieram like crazy. Someone around to explain that you had to wait almost a year for the next scene with Adrian. Pages I passed (in this case, probably sooner percent) is extremely fast and I even sacrificed the hours reserved for sleep, as I was at that time working hard to intern in Beladice. The second part I enjoyed maybe a little more, but still has that part too good, so I can think about a rating lower than five stars. I felt that I was not even much of a decent plot - I needed

Lady Gaga Goes Completely Naked

But not in the way you think! Or at least not only in that way. LADY GAGA's on the cover of V magazine this month, naked as a jaybird (or, perhaps, a monster?) and covering the lady bits with her hands. That's not entirely unexpected or noteworthy, but what is unexpected is the completely make-up-less face she has on!

Not only that, there are no crazy fake nails, no sunglasses, no bizarre royal wedding-worthy headpiece, nothing. Just her, totally naked, and somewhat unrecognizable. I say good for her! She looks beautiful no matter what she's wearing, and now we know she looks just as beautiful wearing nothing. On a side note, her album ARTPOP has a release date of November 11, with the first single dropping by August 19. You'll just have to buy this month's issue of V to get your fix in the meantime.

Nessie "is an alleged sea monster that will be in Loch Ness in Scotland. There have been several attempts to track down any monster, without any further result. The legend of St. Columba [According to legend was an Irish priest, Columba, in the year 565 to Scotland to convert the Picts, the native population. He walked with his company along the banks of Loch Ness, then the monster stuck its head above water. Columba made the sign of the cross against the Sea Monster and said "depart from me." A Krofft Khronology: From Puppets to Dinosaurs to Bigfoot......

Sid & Marty Krofft wanted to be major players in the Saturday morning landscape, but it only lasted but a decade. How, you ask, could that have happened so quickly? Well, for one thing, you could chalk it up to the fickle tastes of viewers and/or network executives. Then again.........

The Kroffts made their first inroads in television when their puppets were used on The Dean Martin Show. However, they didn't survive the season, as the Kroffts were dismissed for the simple crime of upstaging the star. Considering that Martin was phobic about rehearsing, maybe he just didn't want to be embarrassed by someone other than his guests.

More Randomness or Maybe Just Weirdness

My head is still spinning from moving us, moving my parents, remodeling their Arkansas house, remodeling their guest house, readying their Texas house to sell, readying our house to rent, moving, moving, moving, and moving a little more, so this little corner of the internet has been neglected.

And it probably will be for a bit longer.

July 24, 2013

Chevy Chase movies. That, and Steve Martin, my two heroes when it comes to the women I like to see in the movies. Should I get rich, I'll stock up on everything they've done to set next to my Benny Hill collection. No, I'm not rich, but nor have I the personality of those who try too hard to get there. I like the old movies I've never seen. JZ, on the other hand, has seen them all. And this morning he refused to go to Cape Kennedy. He's tired of seeing the museums and pretty much all else I have not seen. But he says the new truck is pending (sounds familiar) and we can find another beach. Lack of evidence will never convince JZ the beach is the best place to pick up women.

My records show I meet the same number of women on beaches as anywhere else. I say shallow water and shallow women. Give me an electric bass and a motorcycle. On that subject, I tested the batbike for towing again this morning and I'm going to eventually need heavier shocks on the back of the Honda. That's $400 I'd gladly spend, which is nothing compared to the cost of a new Goldwing or the cheapest of cars. Shown here, the right saddlebag cover flew off on the road, taking both metal buckles with it (see picture). My workout this morning was a two mile hike to go back and fetch it.

Those saddlebags are unique to that year of Honda and unavailable unless I get lucky on eBay. Even then, nobody will sell me just the lid. Mucho thanks to the paving crew along 585 this morning who let me walk along their service road to retrieve the part and especially the loader operator helped me look for it as he waited for his trucks. If you examine the photo closer, you'll see it was a structural failure brought on by age. The buckle segment that attaches to the lid is stripped right away. The strapping is my roadside repair, as I have wrenches and starter fluid under that cap.

July revivals: the rest of the month

Hey all, Mike here with a list of revival screenings for the rest of July. Now before I continue, I did get feedback regarding what I wrote about The Right Stuff. Not about the film itself, but how dismissive I was about how few films from 1983 are remembered these days. One Julio Correa sent me the following feedback, I will interject on occasion: "Though I appreciate what you wrote, I do disagree on something which I just have to point out. There is no way that those 4 or 5 films you listed (on The Right Stuff essay) are the only films remembered these days from 1983." I also wrote aside from a cult film or two and a foreign film that I couldn't remember at the time of the writing. I remember it now- Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander. But yeah, I acknowledged very few films as being remembered. Moving on. "Case in point - Flashdance.Huge hit, the third biggest in fact after Jedi and Terms, and that song is still played today... a lot." Yes, the title song is played a lot, as is Maniac. But while the soundtrack, the poster picture of Jennifer Beals and a couple of dance scenes are remembered, the film itself seems to have gone by the wayside. We're not going to agree on this. Continuing. "Also, Trading Places.People still talk about that movie all the time, they have very fond memeories of it.I'd even put Risky Business up there to some extent." After 30 years, I disagree about Trading Places still being remembered fondly beyond Eddie Murphy and Mr. Skin fans. Or at least as fondly as it was ten or twenty years ago, to be specific. If I had to pick one remembered Eddie Murphy film from that decade, I would pick Coming to America, and if I had to pick two, I would pick Beverly Hills Cop. I will give credit in terms of Risky Business; Julio I feel is right "to some extent". Remembered as Tom Cruise's breakout, remember for the Old Time Rock and Roll scene, and remembered by fans of Mr. Skin. The film itself from beginning to end gets short shift. But this is not where I feel I made the huge WTF omission. "But the biggest ommission of all in my opinion (though nowhere near as big a hit at the time)... drum roll....Scarface!Right now, in today's culture 30 years later, I'd argue that that's THE biggest product of 1983.Yes, even bigger than Jedi and Terms." HERE'S where I screwed up! I could quibble about Scarface being THE biggest product of 1983. But the fact that I omitted the Al Pacino film altogether . . . Oh yeah, I royally screwed up with that omission. It belongs in that group of discussed 1983 films today, with Jedi, Terms, A Christmas Story, etc. Absolutely incorrect for me to omit it. Thank you Julio for correcting me, and also for enjoying The Right Stuff with me. Thank you to Jean for enjoying that vastly underrated film as well. Now on with the list, starting with two films from the previous list:

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK- Wed July 24 and Thurs July 25 at 5:45, 8:05 and 10:15 - IFC Center- A DCP restoration of John Carpenter's 1981 film. I posted it last time and won't repeat what I wrote. But remember that this film would have an open-ended run? Well after this Thursday, the run won't be open, as Escape From New York will only play on the weekends after Midnight. Can't do that at the moment, so I'll just post these 2 dates and if I don't catch it then, I'll play wait and see with regards to any potential Midnight screenings in the future:
