Sean Astin Signs On To FX's THE STRAIN!

Hello Schmoeville!

This weekend's huge monsters vs. also huge robots feature Pacific Rim has kept Guillermo del Toro busy for a while, but with that wrapping up he's setting his sights on the small screen. He's adapting his novel trilogy The Strain into a series for FX, and yesterday it was announced that none other than Sean Astin has joined the cast.

So what the hell is The Strain about, you ask? Well

"The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. When Eph realizes that this isn't some new bioterror weapon, but something much older, something outside the reach of science, he teams with Abraham to fight back. As a plague of hungry and intelligent predators overwhelms New York, Eph, Abraham and a motley crew of everyday New Yorkers form a ragtag resistance - fighting monsters in the streets and in their homes, waging a war for the fate of humanity itself."

Cool.

Astin will be playing Jim Kent, a CDC administrator who teams up with Ephraim Goodweather to combat the vampire threat.

Sean Astin joins a cast that includes Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, John Hurt, Kevin Durand, and Robert Maillet. Del Toro will direct the pilot, with former LOST producer Carlton Cuse serving as showrunner. While FX has not officially ordered The Strain to series, with this much star power behind it I think we can assume it's just a matter of time.

The Strain will (probably) debut on FX some time in 2014.
