Summer 2013 Blockbuster Showdown

IRON MAN 3 [9/10]

Who: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley

What: Iron Man versus The Mandarin

Critics: 78% on RT

Box office: $1.2b (All time #5)

Thoughts: I personally felt that this was the best installment of the Iron Man film series. It was way more action-packed than the first two movies.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS [9/10]

Who: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch

What: The crew of the USS Enterprise versus Khan.

Critics: 87% on RT

Box office: $446m

Thoughts: Also really enjoyed the action adventure plot. Interesting villain.

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 [7/10]

Who: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez

What: Dominic Toretto and crew versus Owen Shaw and crew

Critics: 70%

Box office: $704m

Thoughts: Yet another fast-paced action movie, but I felt that it was not as exciting as Fast Five. They upped the stakes nicely though, with that explosive ending and ominous phone call. The 7th film will be released in summer 2014.

THE HANGOVER PART III [5.5/10]

Who: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong

What: The Wolfpack versus Leslie Chow

Critics: 20%

Thoughts: Much unlike the first two movies, doing away with the hangover plot and going with a more generic action-thriller story. Not as funny as a result. The ending leaves room for yet another sequel but this movie has earned much less than its predecessors.

NOW YOU SEE ME [8/10]

Who: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman

What: The Four Horsemen versus the FBI

Critics: 48%

Thoughts: This movie has a rather unique premise. It is essentially a heist movie similar to the Ocean's Eleven series but featuring a group of illusionists. I thought it was a genuinely entertaining movie. The plot was rather interesting with all the twists and turns, but I have to admit that the final twist was not a very surprising one. It was a really fun movie though.

WORLD WAR Z [6.5/10]

Who: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos

What: Gerry Lane versus zombies

Thoughts: This zombie thriller is based on the book of the same name. Critics mostly complained about the large deviation from the source material. I found the movie fairly entertaining. I never enjoy jump scares though. There were obviously a number of them in this movie. Probably not fair to compare it to a TV series but I still enjoy The Walking Dead more.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY [8/10]

Who: Billy Crystal, John Goodman

What: The prequel to the 2001 film Monsters Inc., this film shows how Mike and Sulley met in college to later become best friends.

Critics: 78%

Thoughts: Very enjoyable, quite funny and heartwarming.

THE WOLVERINE [TBC]

Who: Hugh Jackman

Thoughts: I'm more excited about next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past but I would not want to miss this either.
