People like to complain that there is too much music being created. When I hear musicians say that, it often sounds like sour grapes: What they're really saying is that they want their music to take up the bandwidth. However, I like the fact that anyone can make music now, whether it's with an app, an arranger keyboard or a loop-based DAWTOP STORIES

Don't be fooled by the quiet, near-studious demeanor. Beneath the surface, hit-making mix engineer Phil Tan has an assassin's knack for timing, a humorist's sense of wit and a ninja's ear for subtle power. He has worked on records that have sold more than 250 million units worldwide, and he has three big-time Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary RBest Rap Album, 2006, Ludacris' Release Therapy; and Best Dance Recording, 2010, Rihanna's Only Girl (In the World).

The three-day conference takes place this Thursday through Saturday at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. It will focus on teaching methods, instructional resources, learning outcomes, technical operations, industry relations and related topics that impact the theoretical and practical aspects of professional audio education.

Musician/recording engineer/designer Geoff Daking shares with RSPE how he got started designing and manufacturing his range of outboard gear, and shares his philosophy behind Daking mic pre's, compressors and EQs.

SOUNDWORKS COLLECTION

In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection profile we talk with Sound Designer Tom Myers of Skywalker Sound about his work on Pixar Animation's latest film, Monsters University. Take a trip back in time to when star Monsters Inc. employees Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) were just two promising young students at Monsters University in this frightfully fun Disney/Pixar prequel.COOL SPIN
