12 Days of Anime #4: Valvrave, The Romantic Comedy

L-Elf and I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays~! (Spoilers ahoy!)

Does Valvrave even need an introduction?

For the fortunate ones who have never seen Valvrave, it's a rather bizarre mecha series that includes pretty battles with lots of fireworks and vampires. Or at least I believe so, since apart from characters calling these beings monsters or non-human things, we have no real confirmation of what they're truly are. Then again, even our main characters -- excluding L-Elf and a few select others -- have no idea what they've become themselves, but decide to fight nonetheless.

While Valvrave is far from my favorite anime to watch, it does have its entertaining moments. Such as the delicate and adorable interactions between L-Elf and his punching-bag, Haruto, for the great joy of us Shonen-Ai appreciators, and that's it.

Well, there is one thing that I've found very amusing about Valvrave these last few episodes: Character deaths.

This might not be the same case for everyone, but after two seasons of watching this anime, the characters have failed to make an impression on me. The characters either have few interesting points about them or are forced to serve as punching-bags/sacrifices for the sake of developing the plot.

In Marie's case, she was a secondary character with very little screentime, presence, and personality, so when the writers decided to give her all those lacking qualities in one episode only to kill her off in the end, my only response to all of this was a quick slap to the side of my head.

Why Marie? Why kill her off? We were aware that she existed and was a part of Shoko's clique, but she didn't do anything remarkable to be remembered or appreciated by those who weren't fans of her type of character. I would have liked to say the writers wanted to simply add a backstory to Haruto's Valvrave, one that we can easily understand without shutting down our brains, but they did it in such a clumsy and rushed way that it was impossible for me to watch the episode and not think that Sunrise didn't just troll us.

And just when I thought things couldn't get more ridiculous, more and more characters are currently dying like flies as the anime reaches its end.

If the Sunrise team is snickering behind their computers, thinking of how funny it is to try and traumatize us,then I'll snicker along with them too (since it doesn't work on me).
