'Supernatural' season 9 spoilers: Series boss on what's next for Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles

When picks up with new episodes on The CW on Wednesday, January 15, it will be doing so with so many of its characters in completely new positions. For example, Sam may not really be Sam anymore. Instead, it is Gadreel, and it is unclear whether or not Jared Padalecki's original character is really somewhere still in there at all.



But one result of Gadreel's possession is that it will be doing something that long has polarized fans: For at least a little while, it will force the two Winchesters to each go their separate ways. As executive producer Jeremy Carver tells , this separate is going to give us a chance to learn more about Gadreel is, and start to figure out whether or not he will be able to survive in




"WE'VE GOT SAM WHO'S BEING POSSESSED AND ESSENTIALLY TAKEN OVER BY GADREEL, AN ANGEL WHO'S DONE THIS HORRIBLE THING. AND WE'RE GOING TO REVEAL THAT GADREEL IS MORE COMPLEX THAN WE EVEN MAY HAVE PRESENTED HIM NOW .I THINK WE'RE GOING TO SEE GADREEL PUT THROUGH HIS PIECES A BIT MORE BY METATRON IN TERMS OF GOING DOWN A DARK PATH."



Carver also is quick to defend the notion of separating Jared and Jensen Ackles for the time being, saying that it is part of a larger story; but, he also insinuates in here that this is not going to be a change that necessarily lasts forever:



"WE FRANKLY GO WHERE THE STORY TAKES US AND THE STORY IS ABOUT TWO BROTHERS WHO GO HUNTING MONSTERS IN THEIR IMPALA -- NO ONE IS MORE AWARE OF THAT THAN WE ARE. SO IN THE SAME WAY THAT SOME FOLKS MAY HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING THAT CASTIEL WAS APART FROM THE BOYS WHEN HE WAS HUMAN, I LIKE TO THINK HE'S GONE ON A PRETTY INTERESTING JOURNEY. SO TO CUT RIGHT TO IT, THE BOYS MIGHT BE APART BUT THEY'RE NOT APART THAT LONG. WE'RE INVESTED IN GOOD STORY BUT WE'RE ALSO NOT CRAZY."



There are going to also be some exciting standalone episodes that take place during the early part of the winter season, but we will have more on those as they start to come up.
