2015 is going to be the Destroy All Monsters of years for blockbusters and tentpole sequels, with an official lineup that, so far, includes The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: Episode VII, Jurassic World and the 24th James Bond movie - not forgetting Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel (unofficially-titled Batman vs. Superman), of course - in addition to many other titles, be they potential restarts for franchise that are running low on fuel (see: Terminator 5) or the - fingers crossed - thrilling conclusion to a multi-platform cash cow (see: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2).
Production on all the aforementioned films should be underway before the first half of 2014 draws to a close, but technically Snyder's superhero crossover event has already jumped ahead of the pack, as the first footage was shot earlier this month (depicting a football game between Metropolis and Gotham City).
Snyder, drawing from a script by David S. Goyer - now an official "employee" of Warner Bros. for the next three years - will begin principal photography properly by February 2014, with Man of Steel cast members Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fisburne and Diane Lane returning alongside new addition Ben Affleck as a "tired, weary and seasoned" Caped Crusader.
Production Weekly reports (or, rather, Tweets) that "BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN has opened a production office at Raleigh Michigan Studios in Pontiac," with the city of Detroit looking to get a financial boost by serving as the backdrop for either a post-General Zod Metropolis and/or the Dark Knight's home turf of Gotham. In addition, PW says that Patrick Tatopoulos - the production designer on I, Robot, Total Recall (2012) and the upcoming 300: Rise of an Empire (which Snyder co-wrote and produced) - is also designing the sets and mise-en-scene for Batman vs. Superman, working in collaboration with Snyder and 300 cinematographer Larry Fong.
In addition, we're now hearing that Mission: Impossible 5 is also going to begin filming in a matter of months. PW says that shooting on M:I 5 will begin in February 2014, with the production team that's behind Ethan Hunt's latest globe-trotting adventure - which includes star Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) - said to be "currently scouting out of their London production office." Is an official 2015 release date announcement around the corner?
Virtually nothing has been revealed about either the plot for Mission: Impossible 5 or which cast members from previous installments will return alongside Cruise. Presumably, Ving Rhames as Luther will make an appearance, while a reunion for the Ghost Protocol IM team - Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Paul Patton - would be welcome, given their good chemistry together in the fourth MI installment. Unfortunately, that might not be feasible, since Renner will be reprising as Hawkeye in the Avengers sequel, when the cameras start rolling on M:I 5 (proper subtitle TBD).
That said, Cruise began scouting for real-world landmarks that could work as creative set pieces in the film over a year ago, so chances are that screenwriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) has incorporated at least some of them into his script draft. The spectacle alone could be worth the price of admission, which ought to give Mission: Impossible 5 a decent fighting chance, should it wind up signing on to participate in the 2015 box office brawl.
Batman vs. Superman opens in U.S. theaters on July 17th, 2015.
