From The Beginning

Written by: Jace Bauserman

What do hogs and monster whitetails have in common? Not much. That is unless you look back into the history of how Whitehouse Whitetails -- a quality whitetail breeding and hunting facility in Michigan -- came to be.

"We've been farmers and truckers all of our lives," said Laura Carroll who owns Whitethouse Whitetails along with her husband Pete. We had a large hog facility and we began playing with the DNA. It didn't take long for us to figure out how we could use hog DNA to get the type of hog we wanted: a lean hog that had a good disposition. So I had some experience with DNA and genetics from our hog-breeding operation. As for the deer side of things, I was the lady in the neighborhood that everyone brought animals to. One day a lady brought me a young fawn, which was a young buck. My husband and I raised the fawn and he grew to become a very large buck. We never enclosed him, so it was perfectly legal for us to do it. Honestly, that's how it all started for us. We grew to love that buck and figured that we could start raising deer. My husband, Pete, really wanted to do it so we started doing our homework and were able to get a large group of typical bucks from a very nice man who was dying of cancer. We started it just for fun, but as time progressed and we kept getting nicer and nicer animals, we made the decision to leave our hog breeding and trucking behind and jump headfirst into deer breeding.

"Early on we couldn't get any information on trophy deer breeding. It seemed no one wanted to help or share any of their secrets. So we basically learned how to do what we do through the school of hard knocks. We gave up on advice and took our knowledge of animals and my husband's knowledge of feed, which he is very well-known for, and started putting all of that knowledge to work. Before long we had a firm grasp for what we were doing. We understood the genetics and how to work with the DNA. We knew exactly what to feed our deer. Today, it has all come full circle, and our hunters regularly harvest bucks over the 300-inch mark. We offer first-class accommodations and love what we do. That's why we get so many return clients each and every year. And not only do we sell hunts, we're here to help other breeders with their programs. We sell feed and will even setup A.I programs for other breeders. We will actually come to their breeding facility and work with them."

With a love for breeding big whitetails and a passion for helping people, it's no wonder Pete and Laura Carroll are taking Whitehouse Whitetails to new heights. Visit their website at or give them a ring at (616) 675-5067. They would love to hear to from you.
