Sleepy Hollow Episode (1 04) Review

Abbie Mills' 'Green Eyed Monster' Reared Its Ugly Head In "The Lesser Key Of Solomon."

Even though the episode kicks off in Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773, we learn more about the Boston Tea Party's true origins in the present day. This week's episode ofstill continued to deliver the thrills and chills of the previous three weeks, but also managed to offer up some important answers. Not only did we get a new puzzle to Abbie's backstory, but we also learned more about Jenny Mills as well. Also, after waiting four weeks, viewers finally learned who summoned the Headless Horseman."REMEMBER WHEN I TOLD YOU THIS PLACE WAS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL? I HATE BEING RIGHT." Jenny made a run for it at the end of last week's episode, and this week Ichabod and Abbie went looking for her. During the course of their search, Abbie discovered just how difficult Jenny's life has been when she visited one of her sister's foster parents. Aside from this incident being an eye-opener for Abbie, Ichabod also learned how alone the sisters really are. Abbie was already feeling guilty about lying about the Demon, and seeing how her sister was mistreated at her foster home made Abbie's guilt worse. When the writers decided to make Abbie do something so horrible as abandoning her sister, it's important to show her trying to atone for her "sins." Abbie's guilt was a great move on their part and had repercussions throughout the episode.

"I put a roof over your sister's head when nobody else would. No one wanted her."

TEA, ANYONE? Most Americans believe the Boston Tea Party was a protest against the British high tax on imported tea. Wrong! According to Ichabod it was a diversion so he and his compatriots could steal a box under Hessian protection for General George Washington. Crane and his men never know what was inside the bod, but when he and Abbie finally locate Jenny at a cabin in the woods where Jenny used to secretly meet with Sheriff Corbin, Crane realizes that Jenny holds the key to the old riddle. It turns out Corbin had Jenny hunt down mystical artifacts. One of which is an old sexton which is really a projector containing an 18th century map of Sleepy Hollow. Of course Abbie and Icky weren't the only ones looking for Jenny. I love how the writers brought back the Hessian soldiers. That's great continuity with the "Pilot" when we learn Ichabod was told by Washington to kill a Hessian soldier on the battlefield. The soldier, or course, turned out to be the Horseman.

"You created the Boston Tea Party?"

"At the time it was called the Destruction of the Tea. You've coined a more .festive name."

"MOLOCH SHALL RISE." Of course Abbie, Icky, and Jenny save the day by stopping the evil Hessian soldiers from using King Solomon's grimoire to let 72 demons escape hell and into our world. Aside from learning that King Solomon even had a book of spells that can summon demons, we also learned that the Demon in the woods has been stalking both Mills girls since he first made contact with them when they were lost in the woods as children. His name is Moloch, and according to several sources he's the chief fallen angel in hell and Satan's right-hand man. Moloch is the one responsible for summoning the Horseman and the other creatures Ichabod and Abbie have faced. This totally explains why the Sandman had zeroed in on Abbie.

"The Lesser Key of Solomon" was filled with action, but made even greater by getting some answers to our most burning questions. I loved how Ichabod handled the warring Mills sisters, and even how jealous Abbie was getting over Ichabod and Jenny's bonding. Another great aspect to tonight's episode was Jenny handled the truth about Ichabod. The writers could have had her act surprised or disbelieving, but the easy way Jenny accepted the fact Ichabod was resurrected from the dead 250 years after his death was very fitting for the character. The mystery seems to be getting more convoluted with each passing week, and I'm curious how the writers plan to keep it going without all of their threads getting confused. They're so good and it just boggles the mind how they keep everything straight.

Next week Ichabod and Abbie find a young boy who looks like he's been transported through time, but is carrying a deadly secret. Ichabod will be visited by his wife, and Moloch will also put in an appearance. Now that Abbie knows he's always been watching her, I wonder if we'll be seeing more of the Demon in the Woods. One person I hope we see more of is Jenny. While I understand her anger towards her sister, I'm glad Abbie didn't back off of trying to renew their relationship.
