Yeah, we know the stores are still full of Halloween costumes and treats. But before the orange-and-black has made way for the Christmas red-and-green (or the blue-and-silver for Hanukkah) Target has put together a list of the 33 top toys for the season. Included in the top picks from the Minneapolis-based retailer are Sesame Street's Big Hugs Elmo, a mechanical version of the Sesame Street favorite who gives hugs and sings songs; Hasbro's robotic Furby Boom; a Target exclusive Mattel Monster High Power Ghouls doll; and SpinMaster's Flutterbye Flying Fairy, a doll that can flutter on air.
This is the first year Target included electronics, video games and sporting goods to its top toy list. Several are Target exclusives, including the LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer Disney Princess Bundle, a tablet for kids.
It will be no accident if a child you know begs for the toys on Target's list. They are among the playthings that will be the most heavily advertised in the retail run-up to December.
Last week the reported that rival Walmart predicts its strongest holiday season on record.
"I'm excited about the holiday season and I expect this to be the best year ever," Walmart U.S. Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Duncan Mac Naughton said at the company's annual meeting with investors and anlaysts.
The nation's largest retailer expects demand for high tech toys, especially tablets, will drive sales. In Walmart's newly launched layaway program,four out of the top five items in layaway are tablets, including the iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy and Google Nexus. so far this year.
A report from earlier this month said that the National Retail Federation predicted holiday sales would rise 3.9 percent, to $602.1 billion. The estimate was slightly higher than last year's 3.5 percent growth and the 10-year average holiday sales growth.
