So Gatchaman Crowds decided to throw in a bit of dark humor this episode. Jou and Sugane are having a conversation with each other and in the background you hear Rui screaming in pain as he gets his shit pushed in by Berg. I couldn't help but laugh at the situation but then realized how horrible it was for me to be laughing at the sounds of the only trap outside of Ruka from Steins;Gate I've ever liked getting beaten to a pulp by another maybe trap character.
That's right. I've finally admitted to liking a trap character in a show. All my blame falls on kevo for this.
Berg is the one character in this show that I would like to get to know more. He has been told to be this all powerful person that goes around destroying worlds. We haven't really seen the extent of what he really can do until now where he decided to take all his "fun" out on Rui and Jou. But it's much more than him being all powerful. He has the innate ability to get into your head and break you down at a psychological level. We've seen him do it to Rui throughout the show, but seeing him do it to Jou who seemingly was the cool, calm, and collected character of the show was almost painful to watch. And on top of that Berg decides to take on the form of Jou. It's as if Berg wanted to knock him down a few more notches in his image like some evil image of himself. I can't imagine what that must have been like to watch yourself degrade yourself.
I was also a bit disturbed by Rui's explanation of the CROWDS. I'm not sure whether there was some sort of disclaimer in the contract to become one of the Hundred, but I sure as hell wouldn't sign up to be on if I knew that Rui had control over my consciousness at a moments notice. Because as we have seen, you die once your CROWDS is destroyed. Or you just become a vegetable. It wasn't really made clear as to which happens. None the less, it's not something I would sign away at to do.
And that really shows why Rui never wanted to use his abilities in the first place. He is responsible for a hundred people's consciousness personified into static faced monsters with Nico Nico text displayed across them. And Berg just annihilates them without effort. So not only did Rui have to deal with the responsibility of essentially a hundred people's lives, he now has to live with the fact that he maybe killed them off in an attempt to do the one thing he has been striving to do all along. Being Rui is suffering.
While I was really excited to see Hajime and Rui sit face to face in the last episode, I was even more excited to see Hajime and Berg exchange words this time around. Granted, all it was was a rehashing of what's already been. Regardless I like seeing Hajime implement her happy go lucky attitude about everything with the conflicting characters of the show.
And the award for biggest buzz kill of the week goes to Pai-Pai. I got so excited when he decided to transform into his Gatchaman. I had always seen him as this tiny panda with an attitude. But for a moment I saw him as one of the most badass characters in the show. He takes his giant bear Gatchaman form and straight Transformers style switches to a two wheeled car, tells Hajime and Utsutsu to get in, and proclaims "I'm gonna gun it". He then turns a corner and darts down the street like a bat out of hell. I started jumping up and down in my seat like a fool at how cool I thought Pai-Pai had become. That is, I "thought" he was cool. His moment of glory left as quickly as it had begun. He had a sudden realization that he had to "defeat" the person trashing up his team and the person responsible for the death of numerous planets. Once that dawned on him he kicked the two girls out and drove off into the night like a dog with his tail between his legs. You trolled me Pai-Pai.
