Ghost waves haunt the oceans

Here on the North Coast we're fairly wave conscious. We hear a lot about sneaker waves, and rogue waves, ships regularly get a good buffeting from heavy seas crossing the Columbia River bar, and tsunami awareness/preparedness is on just about every coastal town's agenda.

Halloween's a time for scary stories - like one about MONSTER WAVES, for instance. Some avid surfers actually go 100 miles out to sea off California searching for the 50-plus-foot "ghost" waves that seem to come out of nowhere (and have been known to reach 100 feet high), that crash over Cortes Bank, which is submerged about 15 feet below the surface.

Chris Dixon has just published a chilling book about the discovery of the wave phenomenon there, and the surfers who go out and ride them, "Ghost Wave: The Discovery of Cortes Bank and the Biggest Wave on Earth."

The photo on the cover of the book made the Ear gulp, and a screen shot from the video trailer that goes with the book () is pictured above. The Ear was glad the video is on a very small screen - it's downright creepy. The Ear is also very relieved those waves are nowhere near the North Coast.
