Halloween Books for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Its time to break out those Halloween books! Who doesn't love some fun and spooky books? We do for sure! Halloween is one of my favorite times of year so we have a huge stockpile of Halloween themed books.Of that stack these nine books below seem to be the top books. Well this week anyway!

WHO'S THERE ON HALLOWEEN? BY PAMELA CONN BEALL & SUSAN HAGEN NIPP- "Encourages readers to play along and use the clues to name the holiday characters hidden inside."A great read for the younger crowd.Cute illustrations and fun rhymes are a great way to introduce Halloween creatures and fun!

ROOM ON THE BROOM BY JULIA DONALDSON- "The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand!Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?"

Another favorite with my kids.I love the illustrations and the story but I'll admit I wasn't sold on it at first. It took a few readings (and we've read it a lot) before it started to grow on me.It really is a great book that entertains both my older toddlers and younger preschoolers.

Mouse's First Halloween by Lauren Thompson- "One spooky night in the fall, Mouse creeps out and hears bats flying flit! flit! flit! and apples dropping plop! plop! plop! and children singing 'trick or treat!' What could it be?"

I really like all the Mouse books by Lauren Thompson (Mouse's First Fall is on our ). This book showed the kids that the things/creatures associated with Halloween aren't really that scary :)

THE LITTLE OLD LADY WHO WAS NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING BY LINDA WILLIAMS- "A little old lady who is not afraid of anything must deal with a pumpkin head, a tall black hat, and other spooky objects that follow her through the dark woods trying to scare her."

My younger preschoolers absolutely adore this book! They love that the old lady is so brave and that the items in the book turn out to be not so scary, helpful even!

Five Little Pumpkins BY DAN YACCARINO- Great book to go with the song! We read/sing it a few times every day lately!

Ten Timid Ghosts BY JENNIFER O'CONNELL-"Ten ghosts, a witch, and a haunted house make this Halloween countdown a spooky treat!" This one is also one that we both read and sing with often.

Go Away, Big Green Monster! BY ED EMBERLEY- "An ingenious way for children to chase away their nighttime fears. Kids can turn the pages of this die-cut book and watch the Big Green Monster grow. Then, when they're ready to show him who's in charge, they'll turn the remaining pages and watch him disappear!"

Who doesn't love this book? The kids have a great time telling the monster to "Go Away!!" and think it's so funny every time he disappears.

Big Pumpkin BY ERICA SILVERMAN- "The witch has grown the biggest pumpkin ever, and now she wants to make herself a pumpkin pie for Halloween. But the pumpkin is so big she can't get it off the vine."

This is one of my favorite ones to read to the kids. The illustrations are cute and it introduces the general Halloween characters (witches, goblins, ghost ) in a fun and non-scary way.Plus I like that the characters work together to find a solution! :)

Where's My Mummy? BY CAROLYN CRIMI- "Little Baby Mummy wants just one more game of hide-and-shriek with Big Mama Mummy before bedtime. The night is deep and dark, full of friendly creatures that click their clacky teeth and whoosh past on flippy-floppy wings."

I know there are many other great books out there but these are currently our favorite! Have any others to share?
