WWE - MONEY IN THE BANK 2013 (15)1 Disc Blu-ray / DVD (Distributor: Freemantle Media) Running Time: 170 minutes approx.
The annual stunt fest which sees WWE stars literally climbing the ladder to success took place on July 14, 2013 at the Wells Fargo Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in front of 18,147 fans. Starting life as a gimmick match on the Wrestlemania 21 undercard it became a regular fixture on the show until 2010 when the concept was extended to its own PPV. This time there were two Money In The Bank Ladder matches on the card - one for RAW and one for Smackdown (later assigned for the WWE title (red briefcase) and the World Title (blue)) - with the idea of elevating fresh faces into the main title pictures. Everyone who won the MITB match cashed it in to become a champion - with one exception but he didn't need the title or the briefcase in the first place.
Your commentators as always are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and JBL and while my match review won't contain any results, expect plenty of opinion.
WORLD TITLE MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH - DEAN AMBROSE VS FANDANGO VS DAMIEN SANDOW VS WADE BARRETT VS CODY RHODES VS JACK SWAGGER VS ANTONIO CESARO
Interestingly everyone in the match is a heel which made for some awkward crowd reactions at first, but as soon as everybody starting bumping their backsides off and colliding with the hardware, the crowd lapped it up. It's difficult to come up with new spots with so many ladder matches having already taken place but they managed it here with some absolute corkers. Look out for Ambrose skinning the cat on a horizontal ladder and the amazing balancing act from Cesaro and Swagger. Great opener.
Brad Maddox wastes valuable PPV time with a tribute to the recently deposed RAW GM Vickie Guerrero.
WWE IC TITLE MATCH - CURTIS AXEL (C) VS THE MIZ
An awkward match as the Miz still hasn't caught on as a babyface while Axel is still trying to shrug off the past three years of obscurity as a jobber on Superstars as Michael McGillicutty. Unfortunately for both guys this show was in Philly and the crowd were chanting "ECW" to Paul Heyman who was in Axel's corner. So The Miz feigned an attack by Heyman who was sent away by the ref prompting a huge "We Want Heyman" chant. Way to read your audience, Vince! Match was "meh".
WWE DIVAS TITLE MATCH - AJ LEE (C) VS. KAITLYN
This was a rematch from Payback in which AJ defeated her former friend Kaitlyn for the title. Again it was a solid effort for what has been a Divas match with a proper feud and build up behind it- a real rarity. It's a shame WWE has conditioned fans not to care about the Divas because AJ was superb here with her subtle heel touches and facial expressions. Now, if only she would eat something
RYBACK VS CHRIS JERICHO
This would be Jericho's last PPV appearance for the time being before taking off for another tour with his rock group Fozzy. One of Ryback's better matches thanks to Jericho although that didn't stop the Philly crowd serenading him with chants of "Goldberg".
WORLD TITLE MATCH - ALBERTO DEL RIO (C) VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER
Del Rio regained the title from Ziggler at Payback after a great double turn when Del Rio took advantage of Ziggler's recent concussion during the match. While Ziggler was the clear babyface here his girlfriend AJ Lee was still a heel which made for an interesting dichotomy in the match build up. Up until the crummy ending this was becoming a great match that would lead to a pay off on RAW the next night. Usually TV is supposed to sell PPVs and not the other way round.
WWE TITLE MATCH - JOHN CENA (C) VS. MARK HENRY
The catalyst for this match was awesome. Mark Henry came out on RAW to announce his retirement while Cena was in the ring and got a babyface send off . until he turned on Cena to a monster babyface pop! It seems Cena is the only babyface who makes heels more popular than him as evidence by how Henry was cheered here and Cena was booed out of the building. Match was better than it should have been thanks to the crowd.
ALL-STAR WWE TITLE MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH - CM PUNK VS DANIEL BRYAN VS SHEAMUS VS RANDY ORTON VS CHRISTIAN VS ROB VAN DAM
This match saw RVD's return to the WWE after a six year absence in the wilderness -or TNA as it is known to some. And of course Philly was the best place for him to make this comeback. In contrast the opening match everyone here is a babyface and all are former World or WWE champions. This was a brutal affair that saw RVD and CM Punk get cut open while Sheamus suffered a leg injury only to then tear his shoulder putting him out of action until 2014.
Another enjoyable show with nothing too bad and the two ladder matches delivering as they should. The booking was questionable in relation to some of the finishes but opened up some interesting future possibilities all the same. There may not have been any real advancement for the talent here but everyone worked hard and had to for the demanding Philly crowd, eventually winning them over. But overall, it was a good show.
