Silent Hill 3 is the 3rd installment in the Silent Hill series, it was published by Konami for PlayStation 2, and it was developed by Team Silent. The game was released in May 2003, with a port to Microsoft Windows released in October of the same year.
Set seventeen years after the events of Silent Hill, where Harry Mason defeats the God of the town cult and is given a baby girl to take care of. Silent Hill 3 focuses on Heather Mason, a teenage girl raised by Harry in Portland. Heather discovers the cult is planning to use her to birth their God, and gets caught in a conflict within the cult.
INSPIRATION.Like all the Silent Hill games, Silent Hill 3 was influenced by the movie Jacob's ladder; one of the subway platforms in the game is named Bergen Street Station, the station that Jacob is inquiring about at the beginning of the film. As well as Jacob's ladder, the game developers said that the game was also influenced by the horror author Stephen King. Silent Hill 3 also incorporates influences from real life actors and actresses. Douglas Cartland's name came from the American actor Douglas Fairbanks.
CHARACTER DESIGN.During the sketching process, his character was modeled off of the actors Giancalo Giannini and Ian Holm.
The developers found the character of Claudia Wolf the hardest to sketch and come up with a concept for her appearance.The early sketches of Claudia revealed that Team Silent wanted to dress her like a holy woman, at one point they had her with tattoos and a shaved head. Eventually she was based off of the actress Julianne Moore; the designers removed Claudia's eyebrows to make her appearance more skewed. At first they were going to name the character "Christie" but thought it was too 'cute', and named her after actress Claudia Cardinale.
Heather is Silent Hill 3's main character and the protagonist of the game. She is the reincarnation of Alessa Gillespie and Cheryl Mason from the Silent Hill game. Heather is important to the games main antagonist Claudia Wolf, as she wants to use her to rebirth the cult's God. She has been designed to look like a regular, everyday teenager with your average everyday clothes.
The colours used in Silent Hill 3 are usually quite dark and have low saturation, as this is a survival horror game the use of dark, colours gives the game a more creepy, uneasy look to it. Team Silent made use of the colours red, greys, black, dirty-off white ect to create a creepy, run down kind of look to the areas. E.g the hospital in Silent Hill (regular world: greys, dirty-off white, low saturated greens ect; Nightmare world: black, greys, red ect)
In Silent Hill 3, and most of the Silent Hill games they use dark lighting and darkened areas e.g. long dark corridors, dark alley ways ect to create a sense of unease as you don't know who or more so what is lurking in the shadows. In the landscapes such as the streets of Silent Hill they used wide, empty streets with low saturation and use the element of fog to make things unclear to the view of the person playing the game. They also create an eerie silence to the game by making everywhere abandoned and the only noises you tend to hear are your own footsteps, and the creepy, strange noises of the monsters; with the occasional dialogue between characters. Mostly you are by yourself when playing through the game (besides the monsters), this creates an uneasy atmosphere for the player making the game that much creepier.
The art style of this game appears to be going towards realistic as it was made for console platforms (PlayStation 2 then onto Xbox and PlayStation 3). However, as the initial release of Silent Hill 3 being over 10 years ago (2003) the graphics are a bit outdated and don't look as realistic as games of this generation. (The Last of Us and Beyond Two Souls).
